Your method just irritates them, they can sink their claws rather deep into a roll. The same amount will hit the garbage can w/o usage.
I locked one of ours in the gun room yesterday morning, he clawed the carpet out from under the transition piece and folded it over, making it hard to push the door open. The other one would have slept in there till we came looking for him.

Well both my wife and I do it wrong, and we don't care if we are wrong as long as we both agree with it LOL.
I think over the top is right, but either way beats a Sears & Robuck catalog. Especially when only the shiny pages are left.
