I'm new reloading and just getting started. This is my first go around and have a technical question regarding choices of gun powders. I am working on reloading new brass .223 rounds. I purchased Hornady 69 & 77 grain BTHP and would like to know what types of gun powder to use for precision shooting or, just a good overall gun powder to use.

Hodgdon's Benchmark is top the velocity curve in the 223 Rem per Nosler data and it shoots great in my 223. It also has the advantage of being an "Extreme" powder meaning it should be more temp stable than most.

According to all of my manuals and the data I've read, Hodgdon Varget, Winchester 748, Hodgdon CFE 223, and Hodgdon BL-(C)2 are the top performing powders (in terms of velocity) in the 55gr+ range for .223 Rem, .223 Service Rifle, and 5.56x45 NATO specs.
