Getting Started Bow Hunting

My son won some award at summer camp for his archery skills. He has asked abut bow hunting. I plan on putting him some more classes this summer, but how can i get him ready for bow hunting. He will be 11 this summer, and I think he will be ready by the time he is 12.

Where are you thinking of hunting and more specific what? And do you archery hunt? My son is 16 and I just gave him my bow. He wants to hunt this year. Sitting in a tree stand for white tail is a big difference then trying to bugle a bull in ……. I'm not sure what any class can possibly teach other than shooting habits. Animal behavior and screwing up stocks can only be learned by trying.

The above is right. Sitting on corn, there isn't much to it besides patience and not rushing a shot.

Out west, there's a whole thing. Spotting. Stalking. Crawling. Using terrain. Getting the wind right. Hiking. Hot weather and meat. Cold weather. Bad weather. Ambushing. Calling. Identifying feeds. Mapping. Packing out. Packing in. For some people going deep in, navigation. Water.

So forth and so on.

The best way to get him "ready" is get him a legal weight bow that fits him and a 3d target of his target species, then practice, practice practice. Once he is very proficient in accuracy, the easy part is done. If you are new to hunting, best to find a buddy to take you and help you with the learning curve. If you have hunted a lot, then this will be a great bonding experience for you and your son. Start hunting out of a ground blind as being elevated in a lock on adds all kinds of new risks and things to learn. Regardless of where you hunt, make sure safety is paramount.

I much prefer the safety of hunting from a blind but often spot and stalk which is tough with a bow. Most modern compounds are highly adjustible so the bow can grow with him. I would not go crazy at first, no need to buy a super expensive any mid range Bear will do all he needs.

I would take him to the best archery store you can find and get him set up with a starter compound bow. Ask them if they offer classes; usually they will have them. Getting him a 3D target is a great idea, and then take him to 3D shoots; they are great fun and build confidence.
