Hi guys,
I have shot and seen a lot of feral pigs shot in Australia.
Caliber of firearms will come down to how you are hunting or conducting pest management.
I have seen pigs shot with 223s and it can be humane but generally a 224 cal is just to small. Honestly a 243 with a heavily constructed 100gr projectile should be considered have minimum especially of hunting on foot with large boars. There was a post circulating this week of a bulletproof boar the guy here in Australia shot with a 223 and a 55gr BlitzKing it was body shot and guess what just blew up. This was apparently a professional shooter. They should know better.
I have used 357s 44s 243s 6.5x55, 7mm08, 308, 7.62x39, 270, 4570,12ga with buck shot or solids. 375H&H, 300 win mag 7mm rem mag and others in bolt guns and semi autos back when we were allowed to have them.
The biggest thing is a heavy projectile solidly constructed even hard cast in big bore lever guns work well.
If you are shooting large boars and they get injured they get angry and will charge you so you should have a firearm capable of penetrating them through the front of the head or through there shoulders into the vitals.
If shooting at night from a vehicle you can get away with a smaller caliber but ask yourself is a slightly misplaced shot going to still be humane irrespective if they are feral animals or now we need to be professional and humane in our approach to stop any anti shooters getting any momentum from potential wounding of animals.

went to range at 100yards bench rest 15 rounds nothing hit paper,17.5gr,18gr,19.5gr max trail boss either trailboss not for 45-70,or my henry dose not liike it.. have loaded up some 350gr fp hornady interlock,45,44,43gr h4198 will try them this week
I have to admit, judging by performance on the animals, the 30-06 gets my nod as favorite. Will I ever use anything else? Heck yeah. In fact, the 8x57 did a mighty impressive job along with the .270. I actually believe with hogs it's 90% Shot placement, like most other things. However I have to admit that the 30-06 really impressed me more than any of them seeing that it penetrated the body length wise from butt to brisket. Yeah it was a Texas Heart Shot, but it's all I had and also the landowner doesn't care how pretty the shot is, as long as the hog is down.

6.8 spcII SBR with pulsar apex or Swarovski z3 depending on day or night has gotten me a whole bunch of hogs this year
I like this post and believe you. It made me smile because it follows the ol addage my an old timer I looked up to. He said, "shot placement is everything. The bullet debate is just a good time. Use what you got".
