Colorado Elk Hunt 711, 70, 71

I think I'm gonna pick up an over the counter antlered elk tag for the second rifle season (19-27 OCT). My buddy grew up in Cortez and has hunted in 711/70/71 several times. Does anyone have any advice for this general area (Southwest colorado/north of Cortez)? Thanks.
