I am working out the details in my mind for my build. With help from AZshooter and another member here I think I have decided to make up a dummy round to send along with my action and have the new barrel throated accordingly. I want to run heavy for caliber seated to fit in the magazine, but want to stay with readily available bullets. The ones that I am considering are 150sgk, 150tsx, 150ballistic tip or 140accubond. Deer, elk and bear will be the primary target, unless I draw a moose tag this year:D
I think any of these will work but I guess I am wondering what experience you all have with this cartridge and these bulletsgun)

165 Matrix VLD, do a custom query on the top right corner for Bigngreen's post on .270 WSM and 165 Matrix.

You might also want to consider the 175 Matrix if you can get a hold of them. I shoot it out of my .270 AI and am very pleased. In addition the Berger 170 is finally out and is worth the try. These bullets are probably your best option on the heavies.

That TSX is deadly at any angle. It eats shoulder bones for lunch. The harder ya drive em the better they like it. I know a 550 pound black that lost both his shoulders and both his lungs. A cow elk that lost her front shoulder, other side rear quarter and every thing twixt those two points. 168gr when it went in, 168 when it came out. HA

I did a lot of initial testing on the new Berger 170 gr. bullets. They were very accurate and held together well - even when pushed to velocities above 3,200 fps.

That's good to know; I still have a few Matrix 165s and 175s to contend with for now and was hoping guys like you would make life easier for guys like me. :D

Thanks!

A 277 Allen Magnum. It's based on an 'improved' 338 Lapua case and was designed for the 195 grain Wildcat bullet. Required rifle twist was 1 in 8 to stabilize. I think that is why I had the opportunity to test them. I think it was the rifle and not the shooter they were interested in.

Right now the only bullet I would put in a 270 for a wide range of game including heavier game like elk it would be the 165 Matrix, the 270 WSM can easily be a legit 1000 yards elk round with ease but I would look heavier than 150's for sure. I haven't punched any elk with the 170 Berger yet so for me the jury is still out on them though I expect good things.
It sounds like Matrix will be coming with another heavy class bullet with a more aggressive profile that I'm also looking forward to.
Run either a Rem or Rem clone and use the 3.110 id mag box which would allow a 165 Matrix ideal seating position lightbulb

I didn't make myself clear. What I was getting at was the media you tested them in or have you harvested something with them?

My 270 WSM is deadly accurate with Berger 140 HVLD's. The one elk I shot with them expired within 50 yards. Shot one this year using 140 gr Accubonds. She made it about 30. Bullet went in behind the shoulder and stopped in the hide near the opposite hind quarter. Remaining bullet weight was ~90 gr. Bullets pushed at 3080 fps. Range on both was just under 200 yards.

That said, I would really like to rebarrel my rifle to accommodate the heavy bullets mentioned here!

Ok, I am ready to send my action into Pacnor for re-barreling. I ordered some matrix vld165's and just got an email stating that they are out of stock at this time and they sent me a full refund. I haven't tried to find the berger's yet. I really wanted to send a dummy with the action but that is proving to be difficult. At this point I am thinking that I will make a dummy with the 150Ballistic and call it good.

Question is how will the 150's shoot out of a 1in8 twist???
