Any experience with March scopes?

I was wondering if anyone is using March scopes for hunting. My buddy and I are buiding LR pistols, and want a low profile scope with high magnification. I understand the negatives of using a smaller objective with high magnification. I am specifically looking at this one Tactical 3-24 x 42 FFP.

Looked through a few of them, but never owned one.

I do want a March-X Tactical 8-80x56 they offer for LR hunting and target shooting with my 7mm STW. They say from 60-80x there's no mirage, and that it's clear as a bell.

Granted, it costs 2x what a Nighforce does, but a ultra-clear, accurate 80x rifle scope just sounds awesome to me. I'll have one someday.

Parker, I have the March F 3-24x42 and it's an awesome scope, but I've never heard of anyone putting it on a pistol. Your issue is not going to be with either the objective or mag range, but with eye relief. The exit pupil at high mag is only 1.75mm and eye relief is about 90mm. That's going to severely limit the distance between your eye and the eye piece. For the full extension you will be shooting a pistol, I doubt that this scope is the one you want.

Mud, at the distances which the 8-80x56 is designed for, mirage is actually your friend in order to read the wind. I don't know of any scope that eliminates mirage. In most instances, you have to dial down the mag to reduce its influence. While I haven't gotten behind the 8-80x56, I do have a Meopta Meostar spotting scope which significantly reduces mirage. Even so, on a hot day, it needs to be dialed down.

I've spent alot of time behind the March 10x60x52.Personally I wouldnt own one,,the eye box is tighter than a frogs *** and it's not anywhere near as bright as my ACTAR.As far as function it tracks as well as anything out there that I've seen.At 60x I promise you the mirage is still there it doesnt "go away",,,learn to shoot in the mirage no sense in turning the power down.

So what would be your guys recomendation on a 40 or 42 mm objective scope with good eye relief? We want something with higher magnification than 14. We do not really care about cost, just want a smaller scope than a 50mm.

This is a bogus comparison. Besides the fact that the March 10-60x52 has long been discontinued and Mud was inquiring about the March 8-80x56, which has a larger objective, you're trying to compare the brightness of an older 52mm objective at max 60x power to the ATACR with a larger objective and only a 5-25 mag range. Of course the larger objective at 40% magnification is going to be brighter.

Might take a look at US Optics--they have an option for an ocular that allows for about an inch more eye relief--which could be handy on some specialty pistols. What cartridges/bullets are you getting these chambered in? I have riflescopes on several of my SP's. Ernie Bishop and Darrell Holland just placed 2nd in the Wyo. Tactical Rifleman's Championship with Ernie shooting a Holland-reticled Leupold 4.5-14x on a muzzle-breaked 7mm Magnum custom SP.

There is an option of purchasing a Leupold 24 or 36X Siebert LER conversion (40% less power), but the eye relief is so critical that they are only useable from the bench really.

Doesnt look discontinued to me.

As far as the bogus comment,,,you dont have to like it,,its my opinion the Atacr has better glass across the board on any power setting.YMMV.

I thought it had been discontinued since it was introduced in 2008, but it appears to be still available. Its specs aren't nearly as good as the 8-80x56, however, which is the scope thar Mud was talking about. Opinions are like a__holes, everyone has one. I questioned yours however, since a comparison of brightness between scopes should be based on comparable specs and uniform field observations. A 25x with a larger objective is generally going to appear brighter than a 60x with a smaller objective. Trying to compare the two is about as useful as judging the quality of tits on a boar hog. As to the quality of the glass between Nightforce and March, I believe March to be superior, however, both optics are highly rated and have excelled in bench rest competitions. If I had to choose a Nightforce though, it would be the Beast, not the ATACR.

The main purpose of the guns will be hunting so we dont want scopes that are only useable from the bench. We,ve looked at USO, but didnt know you could get extra relief.

WOW : 60X - 80X and no Mirage . Maybe in Desert Country on a cold morning just as the Sun is coming up . The only System I've ever seen with No Mirage was at a 100 Yard Range in the NorthEast and it was a Remote Camera System ( I think it was Nikon ) placed right near the Targets and sending a Signal to a TV Screen near the Shooter . I will say a Swaro Spotting Scope did a little bit better to cut thru the Mirage than anything else I looked thru out of all the Scopes there , but it was still like looking thru a Fog .
