Im looking at several low cost 308 bolt actions and would like some input from anyone that owns any one of these.
These aren't "long range" rifles but I guess any 308 can be..even the cheapies.
Looking for the best bang for the buck for a truck gun/target/hunting/whatever rifle but still needs to be accurate and dependable

Im looking at these:

Savage Hog hunter. has iron sights (big plus in my book) and threaded barrel. $440

Ruger 77 hawkeye tactical from CDNN 20" heavy threaded barrel, comes with flash hider, harris bipod and rings) $699 (top end of my budget)

CZ 550

Winchester M70 featherweight (I love these new FN made Winchesters but a little out of budget) $775

Well, I don't own a Savage hog hunter, but I do own savage rifles. If you like to tinker and don't want to pay a gunsmith to do your work, get the savage. If you have a desire to shoot and don't mind paying somebody else to build your rifle, then pick the others. I personally have found great pleasure and reward building my model 12 VLP savage. I also own 2 .308's. The right set up will get you to 1k and beyond. It's a matter of bullet selection and powders when reloading. For hunting, as I hunt at not much above sea level, 850 is my max for whitetail. Hope this helps.

Not a whole lot of bad choices here. Of those you list the CZ and the M70 are my favorites but I'd suggest skipping the FW and look at the FN Patrol Rifle or a classic stainless M70.

If you look around you can occasionally find some New/Old stock M70 classic stainless/laminate models over at GB or Place's like Bid's Gun Shop and they make great truck guns.

It's really hard to get the FW's to shoot well enough for long range consistency due to the whippy barrel.

Right now when I'm looking at any short action cartridge and especially the 308 I want two things, a 3 inch magazine and a 1-10 twist rate, Savage has both don't really know about the others on your list.

The FN PBR/TSR has been on the top of my list for a long time. I didn't mention it because its price tag is anywhere from $850 to $1000 (which isn't really that bad for what you get) They're also hard to come by.
I just wish their barrels were 1-10 instead of 1-12, but thats not a deal breaker.
I love the FN/Winchesters
Now that you made me rethink the FN PBR, Im gonna have to sell off some things and go buy one....if I can find one

Well that twist rate limits you to probably no heavier than a 168-175gr bullet in the .308 but if you are simply wanting a short/med range truck gun it really doesn't matter.

The M77 Tactical might be interesting as well but I haven't had my hands on any new production Ruger's other than my .375 Ruger with which I am extremely well pleased. It was a vast improvement over the old Tang Safety 77's I had twenty years back or so.
