I've been Nosler PT guy, and love 65gr H4831 behind 160grPT. I'm interested in AMax162 gr for LR. What are your pet loads for the AMax? If possible, I'd like to stick to H4831 because I've got lots of it. I know there are tons of information, but would like to hear latest, despite H4831 being old.:D

Load for a moly coated 162 A-max and 7 Rem mag. 72 grs of Retumbo for 2975 fps from 24" barrel.

If you cannot get the A-max to shoot there is now what I consider a great alternative, the 168 Berger Hybrid hunting bullet. BC is .604. Midway stocks them. The box says classic hunter and I understand there will eventually be a higher BC hybrid hunting bullet called the elite hunter.

Midway's product name:

Berger SAAMI Hybrid Hunting Bullets 284 Caliber, 7mm (284 Diameter) 168 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail Box of 100 Product #: 145477 Status: Available
$44.99

Link to Midway: Search results for: rifle bullets

I just worked up a load with this bullet in a 284 win and finding an accurate load was very easy. The hybrid really is seating depth friendly. FYI this 284 would not shoot the 162 A-max.

I am pushing the 162 Amax with 71.7 gr of Retumbo. The load is accurate to 1000 yards and is moving about 2950 out of an old 700-ADL, 24" in an XLR Chassis. My only complaint on the Amax is the stores don't keep them in stock.

Thanks for all replies to my post. While not about H4831, I sincerely appreciate your help. I'll have to try H1000 which I have some.

I have a box of Amaxs all sorted out and never even loaded 1 , The 168gr classic hunter is very easy to load though, I wouldn't recommend doing much of your load testing at 100yrds though.

I'd say from what you've said you've answered your own question. If you are already using 65 grain h4831 with a 160 there's no reason to re-invent the wheel. I'd back off a few grains and run a ladder to top pressure with it. Find the sweet spot and let her fly. You may have to tweak the distance to the lands a bit after you find the charge it likes best, but you already know a lot about what your rifle will do.

Thanks Lefty7mmstw for your kind post. You seem to have more confidence in me than I have in myself lol. Thanks for the cartridge length pointer. I'm more of a utilitarian reloader. I'd first seat bullet to published length, then juggle between the magazine length and what will chamber. Never have tried seating depth and load development. Nevertheless, it has been my experience that hand loads usually group better than factory, and with better bullets selection, I've been satisfied. LRH is still something I need to venture cautiously.

I've shot nothing but 162gr amax and 63.5gr h4831sc for the last 6 years. I tried some retumbo but it shot about where I am now anyhow so figured I'd keep it for later. I get 2965fps out of my 1-9tw 26" rifle

Believe it or not Imr4350 is by far the most accurate powder for 162 amax in my 24" 7mag.
These groups are at 200 yards, not 100 yards !

Tested IMR 7828 and 162 AMax's in my 7 mag last weekend and this weekend with solid results.

Gun: Remington 700 1st Series Sendero (1996)
Mods: Bedded and trigger job done
Scope: Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50

Followed Bergers load data for the 168's

Started at 63 and went .3 increments to 65.1 last weekend. All shells loaded at .040 off. Started here on the seating depth because it shot the 120 Vmax's well there.

Shot a .336 at 64.5 in 61* temp and gusty winds

Started at 64 and went .1 increments to 64.5 this weekend. Again at .040 off.

Shot a .385 at 64.5 in 43* temp and calm wind with off and on mirage.

Safe to say we're going to call her good right there. Real pleased. Have not chrony'd it yet. But it's gotta be somewhere around 2950 beings it has a 26" Barrel. Will do that this week and report.
