6.5x284 shooters

Primers are just another variable in the puzzle. I usually start out with Federal match primers and look for the most promising load. Once I have found a load that delivers the best performance than I may try tweeking the load by switching to a different primer.
More often than not, I end up staying with the Federals.

CR does make a 135, I have 500 of them so not a rumor. It is not a cataloged item. Greg just started making them. Have not got to test them yet, but they are supposed to be more stable than the 147 which was a very good bullet. I also have 400 of his 100 gr 6mm instead of the 105s, another non cataloged bullet. Greg also has dies on order for a 135-140 Flatbase match bullet for the 6.5 like the super excellant 187 BIB bullet that is so hot. Not sure what twist will work best, as the 30 cal likes a 1-12 or even 1-13 twist with the 300 Ackleys. Think my 6.5/06 AI with 1-8.5 might push them fast enough to shoot accurately.

OK Weber just got in a big JLK order, got 600 210 JLKs last week. John Hoover in PA(814) 684-5322 is the only other stocking JLK dealer but he is a littel higher in price.

My gun shoots the 140smk and 140amax at about .3 to .4 at 100yds. I had a problem killing groundhogs with the smk's though. They would shoot through them and they would run to the hole. The amax solved that problem. Used them on deer this year...this one was shot at 742 yrds

Fatboy, thanks for the tip on seating depth, as Im new to the 6.5x284. Saturday I tried 140 AMAX -.020 and got a .21 3 shot at 100. Would have tried 5, but I only had 3 to try at that load. Load was 52.0 of H4831 @ 2858 which I know is slow, but will go up to 53.5/54.0 and see how it does.

JimD,

If you're using H4831sc bereal carefull up'ing the charge. It spikes quickly, and my 50.5gr load would blow 4 primers per 100 in the summer. This was with a faster lot of H4831sc that's I'm out of now, but there may be lots of it left out there.

Also,, most I know shooting AMAX's kiss the lands, but this too will cause the pressure to spike.

I tell ya, if I had a rifle shooting in the low .2", I'd give up the 50 to 75fps and shoot it. I may try (I would) to see if they'll shoot that well at 2950, but if not, I'd back her down and stay in the 2850 range and be happy.

WOW! 2850FPS sounds real familiar! I used H4350 to get around that Volosity and look what it did.

I gotta go back to the range this week end and put 5 down ther to make shure it was not a fluke.

FatBoy, Im like you, and not that concerned about velocity, but figured Id bump it up and see. I didnt have any pressure at 52.0. My buddy has a 6.5x284 that he shoots at 2850 and its shot 3-shot 2in. groups at 1000 and 5-shot 5in. groups at 1000 (under perfect conditions), so who cares if its alittle slow.

As far as seating depth, I guess its where it likes em. I had a somewhat promising load at 48.5 H4350 at -.020 and tried seating a few thousanths into the lands and it shot for ****, the rifle must like these with jump.

Ive read this caliber is finicky, and it seems to be as 4350 and RL22 were not that impressive in THIS rifle.
