How fast are you guys pushing the 140 gr bullets with your 6.5x284? I have a 25-06 rem. with the barrel almost done and am thinking about rebarreling to the 6.5x284. This would be used for long distance deer and antelope only. Reasons that I am wanting to do this is because of the 140 gr Berger and the ability to use Lapua brass.

Thanks.

I'm only pushing mine @ 2850-2875. In both of the 6.5x284 I've built, this seems to be the most accurate using 45.5 gr of h4350.

I run the 140's at about 2865 fps from a 25" barrel. I've run them up to 2950+ in this rifle with good accuracy.

I'm confident that the milder load is sufficient to take deer at 800+ yds which is about as far as I can range and stage a shot where we normally hunt. And, it still performs nicely on steel out to 1k.

I have bigger cartridges if I need to reach out farther.

With the most recent lots of Retumbo I'm getting velocities of 3000-3020 FPS out of two 6.5x284 rifles with 26" barrels and producing consistent .25-.5 MOA. Lapua brass, 140 Hunting Berger VLD's and Fed215's. Older lots were producing velocities of 2965 with the same charge of 59gr. Pressures appear to be the same, as are the ES which are running 10 FPS or less. Interestingly, both my rifles perform best with bullets seated .075" off the lands. I run my hunting loads at 2965 even with the newer lots of Retumbo because I use calibrated turrets. This requires backing off 1.5 gr. with the new lots of Retumbo. I am exclusively a deer and antelope hunter and found that the 140's at 2950+ are deadly from 50-1000 yards. No bullet blow up, and complete penetration, 1" entrance, 2-3" exit wounds on broadside shots.

Have pushed mine to 3000-3100 from a 26" bbl with 140 VLD. Ran a stiff load of Retumbo and I'm at 4000ft altitude. It shot moa @ 600yds+. Longest cold bore shot was 960yds. I find it more fun to run 2900-2950fps. Things wear out faster when you have the throttle to the floor all the time. Good luck, Weezer

Thanks for all of the replies. For those that are shooting H4831SC, what kind of accuracy are you getting at extended ranges? I use that powder in my 25-06 now so it would be nice to be able to use that powder for the 6.5 as well.

56-58 grs of Re 25 behind 140's from Lapua/Berger/Nosler is giving us 2920-3080 in 3 different 28" barrels.

57-58 might be to hot in some barrels.

Lapua brass, Fed 210M, touching lands

I get .25MOA at 500 yards with my LRH in 6.5x284. Hunting 140 VLD's, 53 gr. 4831sc, Fed 210M. .075" off the lands.

Surf the web and I think you will find the 600yd match winners running very close to what Grayfox posted
