6.5 PRC?

From a guy who's done load dev on several 65 saums, PRCs, and X284s.......the saum usually gives an extra 75+- fps before seeing pressure signs. It does hold 5gr more volume. A 65saum with 0.200+ freebore ran in a medium action with 156 Bergers will put big deep holes in anything on this continent for a long ways out, thr prc is just a step or two behind it. I def recommend going with a 7.5 or 7.75tw barrel for any this cases, especially if running a shorter barrel, reduced velocity

I've done both on builds that allowed 3.150 mag length, saum always wins. The 4 or 5 gr case capacity does have an advantage. Brass options dev favors the prc. Nothing wrong with either.

I would think that if one had a 6.5 Creed, the 6.5 RPM would be a compliment without the overlap.

I may be a bit practical for this conversation, or maybe just need a bigger safe...
 
I have been playing with a CA ridgeline FFT . It has been the biggest pita i have ever dealt with. I deeply regret going with a short 20" barrel. I finally got it to shoot and had to settle for vel i have. Now im stuck with a short action magnum boltface. What is disappointing i have a 260AI with a 26" pipe kicking its ***. I didn't think barrel length would matter that much but it does. I did settle in with a 140 grainer at 2911 fps 1/2" moa . I wanted to see that 3000 mark but accuracy and velocity did not go hand in hand.

65 rpm is a long action cartridge, holds 81 ish grains of water. I think a 65-7prc(equal case capacity) is the better option, especially with adg, Peterson and lapua brass options.
6.5 rpm Freebore is only 0.100 long, then it has a 0.75° lead angle VS the standard 1.5°. So its a low angle throat in a quite overbore case, the throat will move quickly. Cool idea by weatherby, odd execution as their chamberings traditionally have a mile of freebore for long heavy bullets, but not this one!

Would having half the lead angle mean possibly half the barrel life in that cartridge?

Or, just adjusting your CBTO would remedy?

I'm guessing a "hunting rifle" may not see 2000 rounds in its life.

Hard to say, not a lot of documentation on that particular lead angle. The standard 1.5 works well, a Berger hybrid ogive typically engages 30k past freebore into the lead angle . This is half that angle, so the Berger might engage it 60k in the lead, hard to say as I've not played with one. I'm just comparing specs in the saami design that stick out VS all the other reamer prints I've made or compared to.

I wonder if this is Weatherby's way of giving it a little more "freebore" utility while keeping it within the confines of their 6-lug action.
