6.5 creed elk loads

How's it going. My name is Ryan. I've never registered here, but I've been lurking for years! I was wondering if someone can help me work up a load for my son's elk hunt. He has a cow hunt in December here in the gila! Current set up, is a ruger predator, 6.5 creed. Barrel was cut to 18 inches, so I can run it suppressed. My son is only 10. Previous loads were 140 grain accubonds, using h4350. Sadly, my phone crashed and I lost all my chrono and load data with it. Lesson learned, don't rely on electronics! Been thinking of stepping up to some hornady eld-x 143's. But I've been reading a lot of skeptical stuff on those bullets. Should I just stick with accubonds? With the short barrel, I won't be able to squeeze out the fps id like to. But as long as I can reach around 2600 fps. I should be fine. Any help would be appreciated

At those speeds, aside from a FMJ pretty much any bullet will do just fine

I've heard of issues with the eld-x's. Seems to be more common with higher velocities, that they have a tendency to disintegrate!

I would not hesitate at all to try the eld x, and the bc is much improved over the Accubond. I'd say see how they shoot. They are also significantly cheaper.

I had customers have good luck with the 143 gr ELDX out of their 6.5 CM. But I think for you it's best to stick with your 140 gr AB. I'd just call Nosler and ask them for load data and they'll get you squared away.

Plenty of great bullets you could use. Accubond, ELDX, ELDM, Barnes, etc.

I would take the accubond over the eldx all day long. Bc is secondary to being a structurally sound bullet. My choice would be terminal ascent, lrx, scirroco, accubond, partition, hammer, then whatever else you can come up with, then the eldx.

41-42 grains of 4350 and eldx and it just fine dont over think it. Killed a lot of elk and deer with them.

These are approaching book max. You can get either bullet over 2600 fps. w/ H4350.

The eld-x should work fine at these lower velocities.

If you have a can on the end, you'll likley get a small bump in velocity from these numbers.

All of that is also dependent on other factors such as powder lot, temp, etc.
But, this will get you in the ball park to check for accuracy.

You might also look at the Barnes 127gr LRX. The Coppers are great for penetration and you'll get better velocities with a lighter bullet.

127 gr Barnes LRX for the win! Creedmoor is a little underpowered for elk IMO but if you use a good Barnes bullet I wouldn't be afraid of it. The LRX bullets are slightly softer than the TSX or TTSX to increase reliability at lower velocities (longer range). I would put the 6.5CM in the camp of "lower" velocities relative to the magnums. But they're still plenty hard for great penetration on all critters. I saw Barnes factory loads (6.5 CM, 127 gr LRX) take numerous African plains game with great results in our trip there last month. All the PH's recommend Barnes to their hunters. My 300 WM (175gr LRX @ 3,000 fps MV) accounted for 3 DRT plains game and <20 yard tracks on the rest. Great blood trails too. Their BC's aren't as high as some of the other "long range" bullets but the terminal performance is too good to ignore.
