My dad re bored a pre 64 model 70 to 6.5-06 AI in the 1970s. He shot a goat and a few antelope with it. As far as I am concerned there isn't a nickel worth of difference between it and the 25-06 or the .270. I am sure with the bullets available now one could demonstrate a difference at least on paper at very long range. If you want to do it then do it. I like playing with guns as well as the next guy but I would have preferred that model 70 in the 220 swift that it came in. Just personal preference.

My 6.5/06ai is a 27" shooting 147's and 150 sierria's at 3110-3120. I haven't shot the 156's and for now don't plan too. No game yet either but side by side with my 270 shooting 140 gamechangers @3140 the difference in drift at 600yds and out is dramatic. The amount the plate moves beyond 450yds is also significant. How this translates to game should be significant as well. The AI is not a carry gun at 14ish# compared to the 8# 270.
Both rifles are using RL26 to attain those velocities over a magneto speed.
The 6.5 bullets have a big sectional density advantage over both the 25 and 27 bullets for the standard 10 twists those calibers come standard with also

I'll switch my 6.5 A-square to 270 Winchester once I burn the barrel out,,, don't get me right or wrong,,, I like the 6.5,,, but as mentioned,,, the 25/06 and 270 are so close that it isn't worth the extra work for me...
For me that is,,, I'll admit one thing,,, what a great way to learn about brass prep in every stage along the way... Attention to details for sure...
I'm all about the 140/ 150 gr boolitz these days,,, a lot less recoil then my 180/ 200 grain'ers...
I find I'm spending more time hunting predators and black bears,,, the simple easy stuff...
I enjoy my 308 and 30/06,,, but the little bit I save on Windage and reaching out there on gongs in the 1 km zone is pretty easy to stay on target...
The sleek long bullets seem to be forgiving at distance,,, a small amount that is...
I wouldn't be a bit suprized if my 308 PRS rig dosen't end up with a 6.5 Lapua,,, 260,,, or a 6.5x47...
I think my 30/06 days are slowing down,,, I'm planning on giving the 150/155 grain'ers a run this winter to find out how they shoot...

I have a 6.5-06 A-Square. Have had it for 3+ years. 24" E.R. Shaw stainless Bb; 1/8 twist. Deadly accurate. I primarily shoot the Barnes 120gr TTSX at 3277 fps using IMR-4350. Compete directly with the PRC only less expensive. Using RCBS 6.5-06 A- Square dies. Simple to load for . Use new or once fired 25-06 or 30-06 brass. one pass thru the 6.5-06 FL sizer, load & shoot. You will love this cartridge.
