338 otm 300gr

About to go on my first hog hunt and I am trying to decide which gun to take. I want to take my 338 edge with 300gr berger otm tactical hybrids. My guide thinks he can put me on a boar that is 400-500lbs. Will the bergers reliably get the job done on a hog that big/tough or should I try to get some accubonds? Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know how the Berger's will do on large hogs, but can tell you how the bonded core bullets
(like the Accubond and Interbonds) and the partitioned bullets (Swift A frame and the Nosler partitions)do.

Hogs are tough and probably any 300 grain bullet from a 338 would do but why take a chance.

I shot some hogs in TX with 185 gr barnes MRX out of my 338 lapua and I got a 2 for 1 at 200 yards… Accubonds worked well too. I think the 300 gr will work but I agree, why chance it…. Get a hardcore bullet that will break S_ _ T when it hits!!!!

Clip them in the ear hole, where you're suppose to.

Ok so the Berger is out now I need to decide whether to go with Accubonds or a TTSX and what weight. I will also need load data because all I have shot are 300gr OTM or SMK. What do you guys think?

I've never shot anything with a 300 OTM but I've seen very very little on here from people like Broz that would dissuade me from using one

The 300gr OTM shot from my EDGE will shoot through .25" mild steel at 1200 yds. A hog is not as tough as steel. I have shot through big boars with 178 Amax from a .300 ultra. The Amax is not as tough a bullet as the OTM. A 300gr OTM at EDGE velocities will kill any hog that ever lived. Gary

I am not a hog hunter but many friends are. We have stuck the 300 OTM through many many bull elk at all distances and all kinds of placement, as well as moose, deer, hogs, bear and antelope. Recently I got a full report of a Bull Buffalo taken with a 300 OTM from an EDGE, penetration was good even on a shoulder hit.

If I were going hog hunting, I would find other things to worry about than killing even the biggest one with a 300 OTM from a good shooting EDGE.

Shoot what you know and go kill the Hogs. Instead of using time and money to work up a new load I would just do a little more practice with your proven OTM load right before the hunt.

I shoot OTM's out of my 338 Norma and I would tackle almost anything with them any where.I shot a elk rear leg bone at 300 yrds with one and just schrapnaled it. The energy blew it threw a piece of OSB hole size of grapefruit.

Glad to hear several of you guys have confidence in the OTM because I really didn't want to buy more bullets or develop another load. What are the OTMs like in comparison to a 300 SMK as far as hunting goes? I have both and my gun shoots both equally well.

Take your pick. They both kill just fine. If the shots are going to be past 1000 I give a nod to the Berger.

Shots will very likely be 350yds or under.

The OTMs leaving at 3050 out of my 1-10 338 Lapua imp will go clean through 1/2" mild steel at 800 yards, if anything they are too tough.

A .338 300 grain projectile is a big bullet.
