338 high BC bullets

how are they on game? I am considering them, I spoke with Dan today, and he recommended the 64 or 65 in 252 to start with. I am shooting a 338 edge with a 34" barrel, I have shot SMK's at 2950. I tried the berger but so far got the nose slump issue I have been talking to Brian and will try a few things he mentioned if just for research purposes. Theres really nothing wrong with the smk's just exploring my options. I am in northeastern pa and just heard about cutting edge so I figured I would look into it more. any recommendations you can give me?

We have not had the 300 gr long enough to test on Game. Hopefully we'll have some results on Elk next month. Dan has had favorable results with the .308's.
I would not suggest the 300's for the Edge, stick with the 252's. We put a really sharp twist on the .338-.408 for the 300 gr bullet.

Nothing wrong with the 300 SMK and a 10 tw in the Edge, but I understand the want to explore.

Where in NE PA are you? Heading up that way on Sunday to shoot them...

Down Under Hunter

What weight RM Bullets did you get and what .338 chambering will you be firing these from????

I've looked at RMB's site numerous times and asked around but I have yet to find anyone that has shot any of their bullets.

Keep us informed of your results. I eagerly await your findings....

dunmore, right near scranton, where or who are you shooting with?

I was just in Dupont on Tuesday...

I am shooting at a private range just south of you near Hazleton..

how did the 300 grain do? how are the 252 grain bullets compared to the 300 smk? my main concern is cost, how hard are they to get to shoot well or develop a load for? thanks again, also anyone want to buy some berger 338 300 grain bullets?

The 300 gr kicked the 300 SMK's ***!

I'll dig out my log book and give you all the data in the next day or so...

We ran them from 650 all the way out to about 1,800.

Joel,
Been talking to Dan about their bullets. Looking forward to trying some and see how they kill out aways. Do you think the 300's will stabilize in a 10" twist at 3200 plus fps?
Greg

The 300 gr will not stabilize out of a 10 tw barrel... You may want to try the 252 gr as it worked fine for me out of a 10 tw. I ran it much faster than 3200 because I was using the .408 case.
We barreled up a 8.5 tw for the 300 gr...

I'll get some data and pics here soon. Been stacked with work..

What about the 275gn? Should be able to push that at 3350ish fps in the 338 Lunatic. It pushes Wildcat 250gn AT's at 3550fps. I've also got a 9.3" twist Broughton barreled Lunatic, that might go close with the 300gn? We built that one with the 300gn Wildcat AT in mind, before Richard stopped making them. Doesn't need the 9.3" for the 300gn SMK, but the all copper bullet is obviously way longer. Looking forward to your results!
Greg

As promised... here are the results we logged when comparing the 300 gr solid with the 300 SMK..

Both bullets were shot at a velocity of 3200 fps give or take a few ft + or - variation.
The 300 SMK was shot out of a 33" 10 tw barrel, and the 300 gr solid was shot out of a 30" 8.5 tw barrel. Both loads are single digit ES.

We did not shoot for group, just engaged rocks approx 12" in diameter. Two shots per rock at each range.

300 SMK

650 yds 9.5 moa
785 yds 12.5 moa
1,293 yds 27.75 moa
1,460 yds 34.75 moa
1,789 yda 49.25 moa

300 gr solid

650 yds 8 moa
785 yds 11.5 moa
1,293 yds 25.5 moa
1,460 yds 31.25 moa
1,789 yds 44.25 moa

As you can see, the solid was 5.0 moa flatter at 1,789 yards. That equates to 90" or 7.5 ft.
They were extremely consistent from shot to shot at each target.

Not an all encompassing test by any means, but certainly some hard data to ponder....

Here's a photo of the solid compared to the SMK...
