What is the reason the short mag doesn't like the heavy bullets, 200-220g. Is the over all length the problem, feeding problems,do the heavy bullet have to be seated to deep to make them the right over all length.

This might be a stupid question..

The short mag suffers only with a saami spec reamer, because with the heavy weight bullets there is just to much bullet intruding into the powder space. With the right throat length the 208 amaxs and 210 vlds can be pushed at 3000fps in the 27" and longer barrels but oal will be around 3.140" and it takes about 70-71.5 grns of H4831sc, MRP, Hybrid, RE19, or VV N160 to push them that fast.

In my experience this is not the case. I have not touched my 300wsm in a little while but I was playing with 208g AMAX and R17. I was not having any issues and my load was under 2" at 200M before I tore my reloding room apart. I expect to improve this in the summer and to also try the 210g VLD.

ICANHITHIMMAN makes a good point as well, I have a accurized 700 sps in 300wsm that will shoot 208 amaxs at 2840fps at mag length or in the lands with Hybrid100v with a 24" barrel, so they are very effective but they can do a bit better with the powder space being freed up, plus it puts the boattail up in the shoulder where a bigger charge of powder has a more efficient ligth off, or easier to get going in a sense.

No problems with the heavies here. I actually prefer the heavies over anything else in the WSM.

I shoot the 230 Berger Tactical OTMs in mine and with a 24" barrel and 7828SSC I'm able to reach 2700 fps. And they still feed through the magazine of a factory FN built M70 action.

Mine's a new M70 action. I bought the M70 Extreme Weather two years ago. I figured I'd entertain myself with the 230's just to see what the WSM would do with a heavy .711 BC bullet. It works fantastic.

The 215 hybrid is also an attractive option at a .696 BC. You should be able to hit 2800 fps with the 215, I'm just not sure of the physical dimensions and whether it would function as well as the 230 tactical in the M70 action. I do know the 230 Tactical and the target version are dimensionally different, but I'm not sure how that translates to the 215. The 230 tactical was designed with a shorter nose to help facilitate use in a magazine, but the 230 target hybrid has a bit higher BC. The tactical uses a .368 G7 and the Target is .380.

Lighter, faster 165, 180, and 200 bullets in the 300 WSM don't come close to retaining as much energy and wind bucking capability as the high BC hybrids. We're talking about delivering 2000 ft/lbs of energy to 750 yards at 5000 ft of elevation when firing at a relatively slow 2700 fps.

Thanks for the input. I am not reloading yet so I can only compare factory loads. I am putting some thought into my next rifle. It seems the 300wsm case has far more hidden potential then factory loads show. I have always wanted a 300wsm but was a little discouraged when I read that. I know there if more performance with hand loads but I didn't think it was that much.

My quest now is to learn more about relaoding before I get into a new rifle.

As of now the 300wsm is back at the top of my list
