.300 Norma magnum for hunting??

I was thinking along the same lines, my GAP built Surgeon 24" Bartlein MTU 260 Rem. barreled action in a McMillian stock, and a Kahles K312 weighs 13.5 lbs. w/o a bi-pod.

Still lighter then my Sako TRG-42 300 NM with 5 rounds, Factory bi-pod, TBAC 338BA can at 18.0 lbs. or the legal 16.0 lbs. w/o the can.

I'm going to give the 300NM another go, this time with a CIP length action/DBM. Parts are inbound. Specs:

McM camo Sentinel stock
Surgeon XL
Bartlein 27" MTU 1-9
Badger FTE brake
All metal finished in patriot brown

I'm looking to keep everything under 10lbs :D

What is the throat length with the cip mags? I have one just about done on a Bat tac wearing a 30 inch Bart with cip mags. Just curious what yours was.

Not sure what the exact throat length will be. I told GAP I want to utilize the official CIP length of 3.681 with .010 of jump.

My loaded rounds are 3.608 OAL using a 230 Berger with a .235" throat and .007" jump. It could be a bit longer to be specific for 230's but I wanted a throat to work for both 215's and 230's. About a .260-.280: throat would be ideal with a bit of jump for just 230's.

I had GAP convert my TRG-42 to 300NM, there reamer worked out perfect for the Berger 230 Hybrid Target, here's what I ended up with for 0.010" off the lands.

2.8460"-2.8470" CBTO = 3.6095-3.6220" ES, most are 3.6140"-3.6170" COAL. The TRG magazine will hold a 3.780" round with no problems.

Thanks for the info, that looks about perfect - typical GAP quality!

Mine also has a 235 throat I was hoping to be able to push the 215 as well. But I hoping the 230 hyb runs good enough.

Has anyone used VV 20N29 in the the 300 Norma or the Imp'd wildcats ?
Picked up a jug recently and wondering where to start

Pro; I'm interested to see how that powder performs, Don't know if you have used H50bmg in you 300 Norma's but it has been the most accurate I've tried.

I do have a jug of 50 BMG and a few other powders that have been used in the 300 Norma,
just curious if the 20N29 will maximize velocity in my 300 LRH at 100% case fill, I've never used this powder and need known and used data to start from .... also have a jug of H-1000 and RL 25 but that would be dipping into my proofed 338 Edge lot of powder .....

My teenaged daughter has a cow moose draw tag good through Christmas and I have a handful of the Hornady 220 gr ELD-X coming, wanted to see how they perform at 100 yards or closer on moose leaving muzzle at 3100-3200 fps or as fast as I can push them from my 300 LRH, unfortunately my 300 Tommy copy cat and 7.82 Warbird are no longer around and neither are both my 300 RUMs, ones a 338 Edge and the other the 6.5 Prometheus ......

Greg and Jason, what is your load data and velocity ?
(I do have 4 cans of RL 50, new lot)

25 1/2" "Kraiger" :) 1:10 twist 5r, 86 gr of H50bmg, 2800, ES of 3fps, .040 off the lands found the sweet spot for accuracy and pressure.

Not the fastest cat in the yard but very pleased out to 2233y, Elevation was exactly what the Kestrel Atrag solved for at that distance.

Berger 230 OTM's Federa 215M's blue or red box, didn't matter.

Do you have any experience or opinion on the Hornady 225 Match bullets?

Negative on the 225 BTHP, I do have the 208 BTHP and Amax but haven't loaded any in the 300 LRH
My barrel is a 30" 10 tw 5r Bartlein in Light Palma so I'm thinking the slowest burning powder at or near 100% case fill should provide for optimum results, My throat is set up to seat the 215 Bergers bt junction at neck/shoulder junction so I have full use of boiler room, according to quick design the 300 Lapua Magnum case h20 capacity is at 118.8 gr and my 300 LRH is at 110.6 verified with fired cases...... so technically I can use the starting loads reduced by 5 gr to start from........

I'm referring to the 300 Lapua Mag data with VV 20N29 and Sierra 220 gr MK from Lapua's website, see pic below ....

Start load 220 gr SMK VV-20N29 93.5 gr 2808 fps
Max. load 220 gr SMK VV-20N29 99.6 gr 2980 fps
3.661" coal and 27" 9.5 tw barrel

This published known data for the 300 Lapua at least gives an idea for a starting load for the VV-20N29 without guessing, I think I'll start with 88 gr and work up in 1 gr increments until I hit signs of pressure back off a bit then start monkeying around with seating depth and ES .....

I'd forgotton that I have 10 cans of Norma 217 powder, the load data in Normas manual shows max 87.0 gr with 230 gr Bergers at 2940 fps out of a 26" bbl , also shows case h20 capacity for the 300 Norma @ 103.0 gr ........ I think I can make mine sing close to 3200 fps, depends on the powder I suppose ........
