Starting my 300 Ham'r bolt gun with 18" barrel. I know most use CFE Blk and 1680. I have been trying IMR4198 for now because already have on hand.
I working with 125, 130 , and 150 gr bullets.
What other powders you tried ? Varget, RL15 ?

Thanks

I've been thinking of building a light 18" 300 Ham'r bolt gun. Probably on a Howa action or maybe a Savage short action and a PTG bolt head, would likely have to order the barrel direct from Brux or Bartlein to get the correct twist but I wouldn't mind doing it with an Ace barrel. I built a AR 18" which I like a lot using a Aero Precision Enhanced upper and lower and Wilson barrel 1-15. I run a 1-8 LPVO which is what I also run on my Marlin 30-30 lever river rifle. I load with CFE 223 but I have the other powders mentioned as well, probably get a little more velocity in the bolt gun and the Hornady 135 FTX may be a good balance of speed and bullet weight. I haven't chronoed them in my AR yet but I have loaded some to see how they do.

My go-to is CFE BLK, but I have also had success with Viht N120. Accuracy has never been an issue with my Wilson Combat 16.25" 15 twist barrel, regardless of powder, but the N120 shoots a teeny bit better groups than BLK. Velocity is 2440 with the BLK, 2420 with the N120. It's a 100 yard woods gun that shoots Speer Hot Cor 130s exclusively.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yesterday since I already have IMR4198 went to try with the Speer 130FNHC and old Rem 150 Corelokt.
Surprisingly I was able to get little more velocity and smaller ES with Fed 205's vs CCI 450's .
Ended up at 130's @ 2328 avg and 150's @ 2141 avg. . I know CFE Blk should yield more. Think will use the 130's as main hunting load and have some Speer 125 tnt's coming for practice loads.

Just for grins I tried RL15 too and wow only got to 1700fps so stopped there. Amazing how it just didn't work.

The 300 Ham'r is really nice shooting round. As said previously it is not a LR rig but one that works great 0-150 yds.

You can't go wrong with those Speer 130s. They flat-out smack the crap out of deer! Just like a .30-30.
