I am trying to decide on a good starting load with the 215gr bergers and H-4350 or H-4831. I have Lapua brass and CCI LR primers.

Also a good velovity range to be at with a 24" 1-10 twist barrel. i have heard any where from 2450-2750.

Thanks
Mike

i would use the starting loads for the 220 gr bullets and just load two and shoot them and look at the primers. if they are round at the edges i would increase the powder charge one or two grains at a time watching pressure signs. what kind or rifle is it? and if you dont mind my asking what do you intend to shoot with the 215s. i cant think of any better powders than what you have to start with. the sierra book gives a max of 2700 for 200gr and 2500 for 220gr bullets.

DO NOT increase your powder charge 2 grains at a time!!! lightbulb

I agree with using the 220 data as a starting point.

I used the 215gr Berger one elk season and was not happy with they worked on a bull so dropped back to the 210gr which perform better in that rifle. Maybe just a fluke so take it worth a grain of salt.

The rifle is a Pre 64 Mdl 70 with a 26 inch Brux 1/10 twist barrel. The load ended up at 50.8 of Reloader 17 Federal Primers and the length is 2.562 at the Ojive. Muzzle velocity is 2595 fps. proven. The rifle shoots that load right at 1/2 MOA.

Attached a couple QuickLoad screen shots one with 4350 and the other with 4831. These are max loads so back off a ways to start. Good luck with your work-up.

Here is a similar data point for you. I recently loaded up some of the Hornady 212 grain ELD-Xs with H4831SC in the 06. I got 2,530 fps with 56.0 grains, Fed 210 primers in a 26" tube. It shot 0.75 MOA and I was surprised to see it carry 1,800 fps just past 600 yards. Who knew the 06 could do that? Now I'm playing with some RL-26 and the 178 grain ELD-X. Looks like I should be able to get 2,860 fps out of that load. Got em loaded but haven't made it to the range yet. Good luck.

Could try RL17 saw on another Fourm a member on here worked up a load out of a 22.5" barrel with RL-17 that yielded 2650FPS before it started to show signs of pressure.

4x im glad you pointed that out. i should not have said that that way. alot of times when i start working with a rifle and can see the load is very light i will increase 2 grains and have never had a problem but i was unclear in the post. i wil be more careful thanks. talking about large cases.

Assuming a COAL of around 3.5", look for best accuracy between 2540 and 2620 using H4831SC and 2410-2470 with H4350.

Thanks for the responses! I will look in the book and start from there. I live at 9000 feet so I will be able to get out far enough, that is not a worry of mine.

Jim the reason I am choosing the 215gr is only because I have 250 of them setting on my bench.

Thanks
Mike

Jim I also appreciate the info from quick load! I am going to pick up some 210gr Bergers today to try as well. If I can get them to around 2450fps that will be just fine out to 700-800 yards for a carry rifle where I live.

Thanks guys!
Mike
