30-06 question

Berger's twist calculator says 1:9 for the 215 or heavier. The 210 HVLD needs 1:10. 165-185, 1:11, 150 or less, 1:12. The 1:10 twist will work well with anything up to the Berger 210 VLD. The 24" barrel on the Remington 700 CDL should shoot to factory specs with any manufacturer's ammo. There is a good variety of both hunting and match ammo commercially available for the '06.

A closer look at the information generated by the Berger Twist Rate Calculator will tell you that the 215 Hybrid's bc is only compromised by 3%, under standard conditions (sea level, 59*F), from a 10 twist. This still yields a substantial advantage over a 210 VLD. The 230 Hybrid will be compromised by 6% under the same conditions (with mv backed down to 2500 fps), which still allows for a substantial advantage over the 210 VLD.

Both of the Hybrid bullets will easily be stable enough to shoot accurately in standard conditions. As altitude is increased, the small bc losses will gradually disappear. The 215 will be fully stable, yielding full bc values, around 3000 ft. ASL and the 230 around 4500 ASL.

A factory 10 twist barrel will do just fine with either of the heavy .30 cal Hybrids all the way down to sea level. Would a 9 twist be theoretically better? Sure. By a small margin. But, it is far from being a necessity to put those bullets to good use.

ETA: As mentioned elsewhere, the 208 AMAX is an excellent alternative in the 200-210 weight class. It has a better bc than the 210 VLD and is much less expensive, affording the opportunity to do more shooting for the dollar.

I fail to understand why there is a discussion on COWBOYBUCKS post about twist rates or ammo/bullets he can not get. He has a Remington 700 CDL with a factory barrel, a clear leup 3-9 scope; and he has access to factory ammo .
