Good morning folks. I'm just now getting back into reloading after about a 10 year hiatus. I got tired of having a closet full of useful equipment just collecting dust.

As stated in the title I need to work up a load for my .280 Ackley, which has also been collecting dust since I had it built a decade ago. 😁

I will be using 168 Berger VLD hunters and H-4831SC powder for my initial run as this is what I have on hand at the moment.

I've been sweeping the books and internet for loads and have come up with a relatively large sample size ranging from 52.0gr all the way up to 59.6gr.

Barrel is a 1 in 8.7" twist, 24" Rock Creek on a Defiance action.

I will play with seating depth as per Berger advice once I have a base powder weight to work with.

Thank you in advance for any help. It feels good to wake my brain up again and start back into this enjoyable hobby.

Kevin.

Use the search engine, there's been several posts about load info for the 280AI

I'm sure you know the drill. Never use someone else's load. Work up in small increments. I am running Nosler brass as well. I made it to 61.5 grains of H4831SC running a 162 ELDX, never saw any signs of pressure in my chamber. Shot best at 60.8 grains. I have since switched to 62.2g H1000 pushing 175 Eldx's. I have a 28" barrel and it works well for me.

For sure, definitely just looking for some parameters to work within. Thanks for the info.

Really curious, what velocities are you getting with those two loads? I've been thinking about this combo for a while. Thanks

You wanna get 3200+ with a 140 and accuracy get some RL23
How's RL23 for temp swings? I've never used it. I'm in Saskatchewan Canada so hunting season can have some pretty healthy temperature variances.

I kinda want to stick with a bit heavier bullet for this year at least. I didn't get drawn for a thing for a decade and then this year I'm up for both moose and Elk

3120 with 162 and H4831SC
2950 with 175 and H1000
