280 AI load data

Just purchased a 280AI from Alamo Rifles. Has a 26" barrel length with a 9" twist. This will be a hunting rifle and I prefer shooting heavier bullets, and I will hand load using Peterson brass. What loads are you guys using for 175g and up bullets?

Some 175s require a 1-8 twist so just keep that in mind when selecting a bullet but going that heavy in a 280AI h1000 RL26 and RL23 all work great H4831 is hard to argue with in a 06 style case but velocity will be on the lower end but accuracy should be great

The 9 twist should handle up to 180 grain...especially with the 26" barrel.

RL 23 is a great powder to run in 280AI.

I shoot the 175 eldx at 2900 with RL23 out of a 24" barrel. Custom throat shoots them lights out

Check out his work on this site. I just copied one of his load, I am shooting mid 2900 with 175 EH, and RL23. I chambered the barrel with pre-SAAMI reamer.

I've used 64.4 gr of Retumbo, Peterson brass, cci250, and a 175EH and gotten right at 3000. But work up to that obviously. It may not be safe in your rifle.

RL 23 is a great powder to run in 280AI.

RL23 is definitely the pixie dust for the 280AI, a 9 twist is fine with your 175 or 180

I shoot at 400' - 1500' elev and only have on 7 mm that is not 1:9. My 7-300 Practical is a 1:8.4

I've got two recipes with a 160 Nosler AccuBond and a 162 Hornady ELDX, both with H4831, in the 58.8-59.1 range. I just think the 160-162 bullet weight is really good for the 280 AI, with velocities around the 2875-2950 range, both under .500 moa accuracy. This is with a Savage Ultralight, Proof Carbon 22" barrel, 1-9" twist.

I am shooting a 9T, 175g Nosler long range accubond with Re formed Lapua '06 brass, 56g of IM R7828 and a Federal 210 dumped the bullets in a bullet hole. Bullets are sorted by ogive length seated within .003 of the lands. Other primers shot much larger groups with IMR 7828.
