280 Ackley Improved with H-1000

So I just managed to get 400 168gr berger HVLDS and 8 lbs of H1000. I have been shooting 140gr vlds and RL-22 for years and want to up to the 168 VLDs. Does anybody have any verified velocity for the 168s and what charge weight? I looked at hodgdon and they have 2790 fps for the max load of 61.5 grains this seems a little slow to me.

I have not tried tha 168 Berrgers yet but My load with 162 a-max is 63.5 of H 1000 and it is 2900 with a 26 1/2" barrel. Start low and work up.

I used Nosler data for my 280AI with 160gr AB IMR-7828 start 57.5gr @ 2856fps to max 61.5gr @ 3043fps they used a 26" long Wiseman barrel 1/9 twist. If you look at Hodgdon data for 160gr AB they max out at 58gr/IMR-7828 @ 2849fps and they use 24" long barrel 1/9 twist.

My 280AI with 27" barrel with 60.5gr/IMR-7828 and 160gr AB @ 3058fps and 56gr/R-17 @ 3046fps.

I've had 4 boxes Berger 168gr VLD seating around here couple years just haven't tried them. I guess should pick up copy of Berger manual see what they mention.

Hodgdon data does seem slow but your not shooting 24" long barrel either so you may see increase in velocity with start load.

Thanks for the info guys. Tom Im shooting a Shilen Match Grade 1-9twist cut at 26" so hopefully I can get close to at least 2900 fps if not Ill stick with my 140s at almost 3200 fps. I really want to get this gun out to 1000 one day just don't have anywhere to shoot that far and I don't think the 140 is as well sooted for 1000 yd shooting. Id still like to hear more from other guys if anybody has any knowledge on this combo.

I have a 9 twist Douglas barrel. I did try 168 Bergers with H 4831sc last year and only got 2730 before preasure signs. After hunting season I changed to H1000 and have been shooting the 162 Amax and picked up to 2900. I am really pleased with my load. You should get close to this. I will try the Bergers some time this summer but the Amax's are shooting so good I hate to change anything and I have lots of them.

I got real close to 3000fps with 162gr amax bullets and H1000 powder and WLR primers. A friend who is shooting a 280AI is using IMR 4350 and 168gr VLD's.
