.243 vs. 6mm CM

I don't really want to be the outlier here.....but here's my 2 cents
I don't have a CM but I have learned how important good brass is. My 243 is very accurate and lapua brass is very good. If I were you and was considering a caliber other than the 243, I would consider an 6mmXC. Efficient cartridge, easy to load and Norma brass. I have three XCs. They are the most accurate guns I have. There is a reason that the xc is highly regarded among long range competition shooters.

Whatchagot Matt?

it's a Kelbly atlas tac, badger bottom metal, bartlein 7.5 twist, 27" medium Palma, trigger tech diamond, manners t5 with a razor gen II sitting on top. Rifles pushing the 105's right around 3130fps. I shot a 243 for a few years but something about this rifle/caliber just makes me smile!!

I am going to rebarrel my pre 64 M70 .243 with a new lilja lwt 6mm 1:8 twist. I already load for my daughter's .243 and will use this newly barreled rifle for some hunting and practice to maybe 500 -600 yards or so.
Any good reason's to stray from the 243 and go with the 6MM CM? I am hoping to shoot the banes LRX 95's.
IMO No.

I'll chime in with another vote for the 243.

Are you stuck on the Barnes 95gr LRX? I would recommend the newer 103+gr bullets(better BC and cheaper), but you'll need to be sure and get a fast twist as others have mentioned.

I have two 6mm Creedmoor and I think you should stick with 243. The 6mm creedmoor is a great cartridge but so is the 243 win. For someone that loads their own ammunition and can select the barrel twist and headspace, the 6mm and 243 are about identical. Unless you want an excuse to buy new dies and want a new cartridge or want to shoot factory ammo there is no reason to switch.

I have heard that creedmoors go well with man buns so that is something else to consider.

Just gonna HYJACK this a bit and ask ?? what you all think of a 240 WBEE with a 1-7.5 or 8 twist barrel at 24 " with a 95-110 gr bullet would Perform compared to a 243 or 243 AI or 6 MM Creed - Forget the BRASS price and Avail - i have Lots ! Just asking ?? WP

No idea on the bee but my straight 243 with a 7.5 twist throws the 110's at 3050 with h4350 the 115's are running at 2990, could go a bit higher but the accuracy is there.

I'd go with the one that you like best. You will probably need another die set to reload for 2 rifles. The headspace won't match usually and seating depth surely won't be the same. So you already will need new dies. So pick one. You already have good load data for the 243 so maybe stick with it. Definitely try rl 26 it will jump your speed 200 fps in the 243. Amazing how fast a 108 or 105 Berger can go out of a 243 with rl 26. 3300 fps is too easy. Shep

6xc Berger hybrid 105 .40grs of rl17. Forget the rest! 1in 7.7 twist btw. With a 26"" you come 950+ m/s. I use it for most competitions and LRH.

I am building 2 6mm CM for clients atm. Why? Because they said it is different. Personally, I see the 6mm and 6.5mm CM as 243 win and 260 rem wanna be's. I hand load so no issue with my 243 or 260.
If you don't hand load then the Creedmoor family are a better choice as they are match quality ready. The CM family matches the performance of the 243 and 260 but at higher pressure.
Personally, with good quality brass and projectiles I believe the 243 can shoot just as if not better than the 6mm CM with an increased in velocity with out too much pressure.
Just my observations.
Cheers
Andrew

Barnes lists load data for the 6mm Creed for the bullet you want to shoot, but do not list load data for the 243. IMO go with the 6mm Creedmoor, I did and am very well pleased, mine wears a Shilen Select Match 1 in 7 twist and handles any bullet I want to shoot, of course, they are heavy for the caliber as meant for extended range and hunting.
