Hey ive finally got a good load runnin the 140 vld at about 3000. Its my only
Long gun right now cause im about to be in school for about a year and i didnt want to worry about feedin multiples while
Im in co for school. So heres my quesion. Would i be safe using the 140 if i got an elk tag? And keep in mind long i wouldnt go past 4 or 500 on really anything yet. I just dot want to spend the money and time workin up a second load if i dont need it. But would
Use the 160 matrixes if i needed to. So any experience is appreciated

We have taken elk, deer and bear with the 160 matrix in the 6.5 sherman with good success. Nothing at long range as yet; however. I am currently testing the new 150 Matrix, which opens easier that the 160 and I think it may be the best all around choice. Time will tell.......rich

I appreciate your input mr sherman ive read many of your threads on the subject. What has your experience been woth the 140 bergers at medium range?

I have had mixed results. Sometimes they are quite devastating, and I have no doubt that they will take elk with the correct shot placement (at medium range). I just think that when you are talking minimun caliber for elk, IMO, you should go big.......Rich
p.s. I didn't catch what your cartridge was?

Somehow me and my attention to detail forgt that one. Its a 6.5x284

I thought it might be when you mentioned just making 3000', but thought I would ask. That means you are looking at around 2900' with the 150 and 2800' with a 160 Matrix. Given the thinner nose on the 150 and higher initial velocity, I would use it if you think your shots might exceed 500 yards.......Rich

Well im just learnin and ive turned doen many shots on whitetail cause they werent perfect so for the sake of the argument what if my ahots are under 500?

Either one should work just fine! The deer won't stay awake long enough to ask which it was:D

Haha i was hoping so. If i was buying an elk rifle itd be at least a 30 but i was hoping i could make do with what i have

You can Gary. I have killed at least 25 elk with a 6.5. It just takes the right bullet in the right place. I had a little more zip than you have, but 500 yards should not be a problem.......rich

I've been very pleased with the 140 vlds on deer out in the 500 yard range, you'll ream a hole through them they won't take lightly!!! Would I shoot an elk with one, heck ya!! I shot both my elk this year with 140 Cutting Edge bullets from my 6.5 SS clocking 3188 fps, both over 800 yards and both made a three foot vertical run! Would it be an elk hammer, no and you'll want to select your shot and placement, deer all you need is a range gun)

used my 6.5x284 with a 140 berger vld at 2900fps for kudu with no complaints. worked as advertised. No exit hole but internal damage was impressive
