favorite deer caliber

Over the years mostly a 270 and 308. Had a 7-08 Model 7 which was a sweet mountain rifle. Next year I'll be using a Sako 270wsm.

Growing up the gun of choice was my great grandfathers old sporterized remington A3-O3 30-06 that went with him on safari in africa. But as of late is has been my two 7mm rem mag savages one is a DIY semi custom and the other one is a tuned up factory 111 for a lite carry gun.

I have a Remington Model Classic 7mm Rem Mag, which I use 140gr Ballistic tips, backed with 66grs IMR 4350,,,killed many, many North & South Carolina Whitetails, I do up it to 145gr Grand Slams with 64grs IMR 4350 when I go to Maine for their bigger bodied Whitetails...My 2nd choice and I was glad to see someone else name this ole gun,,,257 Roberts,,,117 gr Ballistic Tips...it too is a Remington Model 700 classic,,both up graded to Remington synthetic stocks, glass bedded and floated...both are tack drivers..gun)

I've used many also, most of the bucks on my wall fell to a 300 win, one to a 7mm Rem mag.

Nowdays, I don't have a favorite round as much as I have a favorite recipe. I want a 140gr accubond or berger moving at least 3000fps. I have different ways of obtaining this. I use a lightweight 270WSM with a 4.5x14CDS for mountain hunting, a 7mm Rem Mag with a 3x9x50 Meopta for low light stand hunting, and a 264 win mag with the bergers and a 6.5x20CDS for open country.

The 140gr bullet at 3000-3200fps seems to be about my comfortable limit for recoil when practicing alot. I'm also a huge fan of the 140gr accubond for deer. I've never recovered one from a deer and never had one run over 100yds. This has held true on big bodied midwestern bucks at tough angles and ranges out to 500yds. I haven't shot as many with the bergers, or at as tough of angles, but they have all dropped in their tracks. Also the bergers leave a tiny entrance and no exit most times so they don't contaminate a stand site with blood.

I have to agree the 270wsm is a pretty awesome round 140gr. Accubonds at 3200fps is a coyote deer and antelope slamming combo. Its one of my favorite coyote guns because it shoots so flat for so long and fits a short action.

I try new stuff all the time. I kill one with something then try a different load, or caliber. Any of my favored cart, from 22Khornet to 358win, will put a smile on my face.

I do have a thing for small bore head shots though.

My first, Rem742, 243win. How I've changed since then.
