I have probable wrote about this before. In my 308NM I use 165grBT's and in my 338WM I use 200grBT's. I have made Texas Heart Shots @ 500yds and they did there job. At the same time didn't bloodshot a lot of meat either. That's my main thinking is taking down the animal, but bloodshot the animal. Why in God greenearth you need a 300gr bullet to take down an elk, I fail to see. Maybe at some greater distance that 500yds. Now I never use berger bulls to hunt with, and possible not ever. I do have some in stock.

You have shot elk at 500 yards through the @$$? That's some good shooting sir.
To that I'd ask "why on God's greenearth" anyone would attempt this. And furthermore consider it worthy comparison of a 168 or 200 grain projectile shooting an elk up the arse vs. A 300 grain projectile at maybe extended ranges at a broadside elk....
Very odd comparison I'd say...one might ask how your 168 or 200 compares in numbers to a 300 grain .338 at say 1000 yards....it may answer the conundrum on why someone might choose that projectile....

Last day of the season in Colo. By and far heart shots (Not Texas Heartshots either) are the most of my shots over the years. That's been over 50 yrs now. I have a very fair ideal of just where things are located in our aminals here in the USA except for maybe bear.
At the same time knowing what your rifle will do. How the bullet handles the push through the animal. I also push those bullets in the 3200fps velocity. Makes a big different in fpe at the sametime.

Mostly all heart shots over 50 years of hunting is impressive. So your main metric to bullet size and caliber selection would be how it performs on a perfect heart shot at extended ranges (being this is long range hunting forum).
It wouldn't take into account much of anything else a larger, heavier, higher BC bullet brings to the table accept how you know it performs essentially in a vacuum?

I guess you could consider my lifetime of selective patients for ethical and broadside shots a misnomer of how we've all been taught.
