A gentleman at my local club is selling his Browning (X Bolt) 7 WSM. Very few rounds thru it. Not sure of the price yet. TBD.
I looked at factory ammo on line. Not much of a selection.
I hand load, So looks like the best option is neck down 300 WM?

Am I wasting time and money on this?

The 7WSM "was" my favorite cartridge. I had two custom rifles built for it. However, my hopes of anyone making high quality, properly headstamped, brass were dashed, so I moved on. Necking 270 WSM or 300WSM brass is a PITA because you need to blow the shoulders forward.

Fully prepped Win brass will shoot ok, especially in a factory rifle that already has a few accuracy limitations when compared to a full custom rifle.

If the price is right, the rifle/cartridge would be great for hunting. If it doesn't work out, grab a 7PRC like everyone else. Plenty of good ammo and even better brass.

Thanks for the info guys.
I like the 7mm projectiles. I have an older 7RM Sako that shoots really well.
My son is getting back into hunting and I thought the 7WSM would be a good choice if the price is right.
 
I have a couple of the 7mm wsm. I like them quite well. Have mainly used them for elk hunting. This is my take on them if you are willing to reload and your main intent is to use them for hunting go for it don't think you will regret it. But if you're looking for something to bang steel with and etc the prc might be the better choice. Now if you know where to pick up enough brass to wear the barrel out on the wsm, problem solved. Good luck my best memories are hunting with my son and grandsons.
 
I love my 7wsm. You have to be patient but new brass comes along for about $2 a piece on occasion. Used half the price. I've been able to stock up enough to likely shoot rest of my life if I choose.

I believe Bertram has some for sale too about the $2 price point.

Yes, this will be for hunting.
I do enjoy loading and working up loads. Thanks to the many helpfull members, I admit I went head first down that rabbit hole. Never regretted it and never stop learning.

I just looked up Bertram Brass. Their Web site says they are shutting down that part of their business :(
If I decide to get this rifle, I will have to learn how to neck up or down brass. As I mentioned, I enjoy learning new things!

"Good" brass is somewhat relative but Hornady still makes brass for 7mm WSM. You can find it on line easily.

I wish someone would resurrect the 7mm WSM. It has been my primary deer rifle for 20+ years. Quick kills.
 
For a long time the 7 WSM was one of my go to rifles in Win 70 Coyote. Sold all the Winch rifles and stayed with my Rem 700. Started to get into semi and full custom builds. Didnt really consider the 7 WSM because by that time the brass and ammo was already getting hard to find. When I found the 7 MEGA, that sealed the deal. Fantastic cartridge/system.
I am currently building a 7-300 WSM since there are great brass options for the 300 WSM. This gives me a longer neck and slightly more case capacity over a 7 WSM. Fire forming the brass is not really an issue since you have to reduce the neck diameter, just leave a false shoulder and go fire it. You can still quickly find a bullet/powder your gun likes with this method.
