Let's hear your opinion. What is the best long range elk bullet of all time?

- Any caliber
- Any weight
- Any brand

BEST meaning what?
This bullet debate theory has been going on for decades.
I'd personally take a 230 Berger OTM...but that's just me. I have no interest in bullets that "stay together" or "pass through for good blood trails"

I've used the Nosler 160 partition in my 7mm Rem Mag for a long time. Punched quite a few tags using it!
 
I'm not in love with one brand, I do very much have specific bullets I like. In 22 cal the 57 Hammer HHT is a home wrecker, 25 cal we are still shooting 135 Matrix probably move to the Berger after those run out. In 6.5 really like the 124 Hammer and 140 Berger, in 270 the 170 Berger, in 7mm I like the 177 Hammer, 175 Berger and 195 Berger. In 30 cal the king is the 215 Berger and I'm digging the 182 Hammer HHT. In 338 I really like the 250 Berger but have not shot a whole lot of others due to the 338s mostly being just long range set ups.

All but the 22 cal Ive taken or seen take numbers of elk, the 215 I've seen a LOT killed to 1300+, the 195 Ive seen to 1700+ the others all over the board, the 6.5s a pile of elk 600-800.

What do you determine as Long Range……it has a different meaning to many people!

Are we talking about performance, from a pure accuracy standpoint?

Is it's ability to reliably and consistently expand on game at the shooter's maximum range at which it will be used?

Does the bullet generally require a surgically placed impact, broadside behind the shoulder or a "high shoulder" impact…..generally meaning minimal tissue/bone resistance?

So, "best", means very different things to many hunters!

In an attempt to better answer you question, this response is for my elk (or any big game) bullet. Partitions, until Barnes brought out their mono's. Initial offers had some issues, quickly corrected, and now IMO, by far the best bullets available ……for my personal requirements in a hunting bullet! memtb

Factors used to determine "best" are totally up to the individual posting!
 
175 Berger EOL is my bullet choice for elk. Dumped my 5th bull with that bullet 2 weeks ago. I prefer the more fragmenting bullets

My choice for higher retention bullets is Terminal Ascent bullets. Very accurate and have hammered all the elk I've seen shot with them

I have also killed a lot of elk with Nosler accubonds.
