280 Rem loads

Barrel on my 280 is 24"......I haven't had any issues with temperature but haven't used or tested it in temps over 85 yet. I've been working up several loads with it lately with temps in the high 70s to low 80s. I worked up a load for my 6.5x284 last fall at 90+ degree temps and didn't chrono those loads again during the season when temps were lower......at that time I hadn't yet heard about possible issues or I would have chronoed them to check velocity.....I did shoot it at 35-40 degrees out to 600 yds at paper and my drops corresponded with the velocity I had in my drop chart, so if the velocity was lower in the cooler temps, it wasn't much!

That is good to hear. I don't do much in temps above 75 other than find ways to cool off and drink beer let alone anything above 80 beside try to hit the water in the fishing boat. So I won't be doing any shooting when it's that hot. So no worries there. But it sounds like I may need to pick up some of that 26 and try it out.

Glad I found this thread ! Today I started breaking in barrel on new 280. Shot 30 rounds of 150 grain classic Berger's over 56 grains of H4831SC. Gun stayed under MOA for all rounds. Going to adjust charge weight but also have alliant reloader powders to play with. I'm sure something will get under 1/2 MOA.

I've shot this puppy a ton, IMR 4831 and a 140 TSX or 140 SST .... cloverleafs all day. I forget the particulars and don't have my logs with me but PM if interested. Velocities in the 2950 range.

I developed a load with 143 Hammer Hunters shooting .5+/- at 3100 with RL26 but also wanted to try RL16 at Steve Davis' recommendation..... shot these groups at 2983 with 55 grains RL16 at .030 off. Going to up the charge a little to see if I can get close to RL26 velocity and keep the better accuracy.

I adjusted the charge on mine. Shooting 150 gr. Berger Classic, 55.2 gr of H4831SC is 1/2MOA and 55.6 gr is 1/4MOA

Anyone played with N560 and 140's-150's?
I heard some numbers about this powder and was impressed so I picked some up.

I was out today and FINALLY was able to finish my ladder testing of 140 accubonds H4831sc fed 210 primers in what has become one of my favorite rifles in my collection. It's my first 280 I bought in 700 CDL 24". My first round of testing I was able to go through all the loads but the top end. I stopped with 59gr 4831sc 140 AB 210 primers which gave me 2976fps. That group was a lateral spread of .48" The load before that of 58.5gr was a very tight 3 shot bughole and was 2948fps. The last of my testing went through 59.5gr and I ended with 60gr to stretch it out. Ended up neither of these top two loads showed any signs (In my rifle) and both had easy extraction. The 59.5gr load had a spread of about .55" and was a vertical spread. The 60gr load gave me a perfect little cloverleaf group and had a 1/4" spread. When I get more loaded up I will chrome them to see where they are at. I suspect they are well above 3000fps since my 59gr load was 2976fps.
I used Winchester 140gr failsafe I had two boxes laying around and after a scope swap on this CDL I needed to re-zero so this is what I used. I got it close to zero within a few inches and then I tested these failsafes on water jugs. Thankfully I used enough as it went through all five and ended in the sixth jug losing all its petals and just the shank left. I had an extra accubond load as well and tested that on water jugs. It shredded the first three and ended up in the fourth water jug in the shape of a perfect little mushroom. When I get extra time I will weigh those two recovered bullets.

If anyone has a load program and can give an approx ballistic drop and going by the fifth pic from top that group is about 1.3" high at 100yds. I know without velocity it wouldn't be that easy but I would think I'd have to be above 3k with those loads as my 59gr load was 2976fps. My next step is loading more and shooting through chrony.

For the last month or so I have been trying IMR 7828 in my old Ruger tang safety Model 77. It has a 22 inch barrel. The bullets that I have been using are 162 grain SSTs. I topped out at 57.6 grains of 7828, 2908 FPS and very good accuracy. This load is not intended for hunting just an experiment to see how much speed that powder would produce.
