280 rem loads for 168 vld's

Swede,
Slightly different. however, i am running 168 SMK's in my factory ruger 280 rem.

52.5 grains of reloader 22. CCI 500 primers. Winchester brass. I get MOA out of it. Todays' field test brought great results. I'm was extremely happy to get consistent 2700 FPS out of 8 shots with an ES of only 8 FPS.

Its a shooter for sure. Once i get my hands on the 168 VLD i will switch to them for the better BC.

i am looking at gettting a .280....according to the manuals it appears h-4350, re-19, and imr -4831 do real well .

Running 168vld's in factory Rem CDL and Winlite 280's. Any loads / where to start.. suggestions appreciated
Thanks Gents

I've been shooting some Berger 168gr VLD in my 280AI and I used some of Berger data for the 280 to get me started. Below be start/max loads for 280 from Berger manual.

H-4831sc, 48.5gr@2408fps/53.9gr@2690fps
Norma MRP, 50gr@ 2549fps/55.8gr @2846fps
R-17, 43.5gr@ 2465/48.5gr@2709fps
Hybrid 100V, 44.5gr@2367fps/49.5gr@2607fps
IMR-4350, 45gr@2418fps/49.8gr@2654fps
H-4350, 45gr@2413fps/49.9gr@2654fps
IMR-4831, 45gr@2427fps/50.2gr@2681fps
R-19, 47gr@2486fps/52.3gr@2757fps
R-22, 48gr@2444fps/53.3gr@2723fps
AA 3100, 49gr@2447fps/54.5gr@2726fps
N165, 49gr@2425fps/54.8gr@2714fps
H-1000, 52gr@2432fps/57.8gr@2750fps
IMR-7828SSC, 49.5@2513fps/54.9gr@ 2808fps

Barrel length 24"

Hope that helps

I would start with 55 gr. of H4831sc and work up till you see presure signs. I run 60 grains in my 280 AI with the Berger 168 @ 2900 fps. I would also try H1000 and Retumbo if you have some.

Thanks guys.. I do have the Berger manual and it's very informative. Just was hoping for some magical formulas that will give me more than I should expect from a 24" factory tubed 280

BigSwede,
No "magical" formulas man. Just load testing to find what YOUR rifle likes. Only "magical" formula I have ever found was the load for 40 grain v-max on the front of the Benchmark bottle. It worked at magazine length. Thats all the testing I had to do. Pure dumb luck LOL ! If you need any help please feel free to contact us!

Roger that! I have had some dumb luck with many load/rifle combos at the start of load development ... For instance this AA3100 load in my factory Tikka 270wsm...second load tested with Berger 140 VLD at mag length... Should I stop

BigSwede,
Those would be kind of hard to improve on. Test on out to 200 & 300 yards and see whats up. And buy a lottery ticket ! lol !
