Elk season in Colorado is almost here and I have a question for you, just for fun. Which cartridge and bullet combo would you choose for Bull elk to 400 yards? The 2 rifles in my safe that are up to bat are

A 6.5 PRC running a 140 Berger VLD at 3020 fps. I have ultimate confidence in this rifle and its accuracy to 625 yards using a Leupold CDS turret cut for my load. I will be using this rifle on a mule deer hunt in about 3 weeks and hope to get my first animal with it, a big giant high country buck!

Or

A 280AI running a 168 Berger Classic Hunter at 2900 fps or a 143 Hammer Hunter at 3120 fps.

I have had success with the Ackley and Hammers last year on 2 Elk so I have no doubt in it capabilities. I also have no doubt the PRC will do the job with a 140 VLD. I'm not really asking for advise just cant decided which rifle/bullet to grab! I feel all three loads are pretty dang close with the edge going to the 143 Hammer.

So what do you think? Which rifle would you grab and which bullet?

They are all relatively close in energy out at 400...close enough for government work anyway. Personally for hunting the mountains here in Colorado I like a light weight all weather rifle...at least one that isn't super pretty..It's gonna get scratched when humping the high country IMO. But first...which one are you most comfortable shooting in odd positions.

You can't go wrong with Bigger for ELK but I'm a 6.5 guy I would go PRC the 140 VLD has served me well on elk sized game. BUT I hear the Hammers are really a great bullet and seeing as you have success with them on ELK why break the streak. But I guess go with what ever one you shoot the best and you like packing up the hills the best.

I am a big 6.5 fan - I would go with the PRC.

Having had a less than good experience with the 168 Berger at a MV of 2950 out of a 7mm rem mag, I'd say go with the 280ai/Hammer combo.

Part of me says go with what works, the 280AI and Hammers. I do view the AI as my "Elk" gun but I'm also curious to see how the PRC does on an elk. Maybe I should buy another tag and use both!
