I'm wanting to have the barrel threaded for a brake. The barrel is a Heavy Sporter 26"
I put a caliper to the end and have .658 for the first 3" Is this going to be enough metal
to support a brake of this caliber.

Not sure if it matters but, I'm looking at the Terminator T3 or the Beast.

Thank you all for your wisdom,

Andrew

It will work just fine. Be sure to speak with your smith and get his suggestion of the brake and threads. He'll thread the barrel and time it to the brake you use. I have a 300 RUM with similar barrel and and have a Holland 3 port brake on it.

You'll need a 9/16 thread on the brake and it'll work, it's nice to shoulder up on more but you don't have much to work with.

Holland's brakes are OK brakes but i'm getting ready to make a change. Because of the barrel size there is a tremendous amount of barrel whip. My 300 Rum is custom built for light weight and hunting and is brutal to shoot without a brake. Your smith will best to advise on a brake based on your rifle.

As Rhian (bigngreen) said you'd want a 9/16x24 thread size on your barrel. The Beast only come in 5/8x24 or bigger so you'd need to run a Lil Beast to get 9/16x24 threads.

Have a Remington 700 with the laminated factory thumbhole, heavy 26" Krieger bbl and a Vais brake....the rig is fairly heavy, but the recoil is honestly less than a Savage heavy bbl 6.5 creed....I have been happy with the Vais, and it's blended to the same contour as the bbl...rsbhunter

I would recommend the 5/8 x24, I have one in the T2, really tames the 300 RUM, but the main reason is that is the standard thread for a 30 caliber suppressor if you ever want to put one on.

His barrel isn't big enough for a 5/8x24 thread size and tons of suppressors now days can be had with 9/16x24 threads as a direct thread or using their brakes. I wouldn't sweat the thread size.

he said his barrel measures .658 and you only need .625 for the 5/8 thread why wouldn't that work? I've threaded barrels that were at .625. Works great. But it's good to know that 9/16 supressors are available now, all of mine are 5/8 or 1/2.

Warning! This thread is more than 6 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
