$1,500 to spend, what to get for a gun

I would seriously consider a browning hells canyon in the speed or long range model. Lightweight and they come will muzzle brake. Not sure it gets much better for out of the box hunting rifle. Would be really good in 300 win mag

Just bought one yesterday with the McMillan stock. Will report in after I've had a chance to try it out. Expecting big things...

For a factory rifle, I would take that extra pound and get the heavier barrel of the milspec over the sporter contour. The more material in a barrel contributes to a wide node in the barrel harmonics. For lr shooting, having a wide easy to tune node and keep tuned in a variety of hunting conditions is a necessity, especially if ur shooting factory ammo.
IMO I wouldn't want a 300wm for long range under 12lbs even with a brake. I also would get a 26" barrel
A Bergara is another good option.

I agree on the barrel weight!
Why would you want such a long range rifle in a light barrel when you will mostly be shooting supported?
I just bought a Rem 700 SFV just for a hunting rifle & think its pretty good for the coin, spent $80 on a smith to work the trigger & with handloads its shooting 1/2 moa.
Also the longer the barrel the better, 26' would be my minimum.
If I wanted a LD rifle I would have gone up to the Sendero.
Agree with the 20moa base, I put a Mark 4 on mine & then put a Leupold LRP on top with PRW rings. That scope may be over your budget though but not sure of prices over there?
I also own an older T3 stainless varmint in .260rem in a KRG stock & it also shoots 1/2moa with Bergers, nice set up for LD & shoots well out to 1km but runs out of scope adjustment after that & drops into subsonic so yeh if you want to shoot longer the 300w or Rum will be the go.
Whatever you get I would also suggest a break, you will need it!

Good luck.

I've got a $1,500 credit at a local big box store. Want to get a new LR hunting rifle. Something that can take down elk and use for longer shots. possibly moose too. Preference is lighter weight, would like a muzzle break but not necessarily needed. thinking at 300 win mag, or similar caliber, maybe 30 nosler? If needed i could also spend a couple more bucks out of pocket but would prefer not to.

What would you get for a gun coming straight from the box. give me your top 3 choices.
I would go and buy a 300 h&because of there light recoil

Lots of option but I would go with the 300 win. Easy to find loads anywhere and very good on moose. Espically when u load 190 gr and above. Most manufacture run a 1:10 twist so it ideal for heavy loads.
With that being said the older I get the smaller caliber I use. I've used a 30-06 for the past decade and routinely shoot game out to 500 yards. That's about my max range with that caliber. 180 gr h4350 57 gr around 2850 is great with the 06. And with the 300 either h4841sc 190-200 gr around 2850 or 2820 has proven to be very accurate.

You might take a look at a Savage 110 Long Range Hunter. 7mm Rem Mag, is a good option for Elk, Moose and other N.A Big game. Retail in most areas, $950ish. Out of the box accuracy is excellent! For a scope you could consider the SWFA SS 16x. = $300. Base and rings would run you approx $100. Attached jpg is a steel plate at 600 yards. 3 shots on the 5" orange circle = 67.1 gr of H1000 under 162gr ELDX. 3 on the right = 67.1gr H1000 under 160 gr Accubond.

Savage 110 Long range hunter 338 lapua with accustock. Should leave you a little for optics. Just got one last month for my 15 year old. Comes with break. $1097.00 out tge door

I'm not a fan of the Savages but my brother has this rifle and has been incredibly happy with it.
I have the 110FCP with HS Precision stock in .338 Lapua. Only 20 rounds down it so far, but I like just about everything about this rifle. It's about $1350 on Buds right now but if you keep an eye on it you can see it for less- I picked one up earlier this year on their site for $875 NEW. The money I saved over current price gets me about one box of factory ammo...

Ok, slight exaggeration but regardless, with this cartridge, hand loading is a must or you will go broke every time you shoot it!

No question. Even on sale you can spend more on ammo in a year than you spend on the cost of the gun.

Even reloading the cost is pretty dramatic due to the size of the bullet and charge.

I picked up some very hard to find .375 270gr LRX's the other day and felt privileged to get fifty of the for just 62.00

If you reload it's not that expensive. Go west trading 338 lapua brass $1.20 @ Sages reloading. I bought 300 to test. Barnes claims it's better than lapua.
I have 8 reloads through 20 with no problems. Pushed some of the brass pretty high in load development and it's still doing good.
110 lrh 338 lapua mag with Accustock I got through Gallery of Guns, out the door $1097.00
Savage muzzle break recoil is less than the 6.5 x284 that my wife shoots, who now also wants the 110 338 lapua for her elk hunt in December.
Also manufactured bullets that are pretty fun to target shoot ARM 236grn 338 lapua in the go west trading brass with the predator bullet, box of 20 at cheaper than dirt $49.49.
I thought it was a good buy for my 15 year old son. He outgrew the 6.5 284 and didn't have much more of a challenge developing loads for it. The 338 lapua is his new project.

I like my Bergara B14 HMr 6.5 Creedmoor , just use your old glass from your old rifle. I have 4-5 scopes and I keep buying them for every new rifle. It finally dawned on me that I can just keep a few good scopes and keep the good rifles.
