Tikka 7mm-08 & 6.5 Creedmoor

I've been tossing around the idea of getting a Tikka as a deer rifle. One of the notorious problems some of their chamberings have is not being able to reach the lands due to short magazines. For you guys who have some experience with either of these chamberings in a Tikka, can you reach the lands with the bullets your using?

Mike , I have the older 595 tikka in 7mm-08 . the 595 is a short action . I can reach the lands with my rifle . on the T3 rifles there is only one action length . so if you can't reach the lands with your combo you can buy a long magazine , and swap your short bolt stop to a long action bolt stop . by doing this, you now basically have a long action rifle and should be able to reach the lands with any bullet you desire to use . just check the twist rate before you buy . I was going to buy a 243 , but I felt the twist was to slow for the heavy bullets I wanted to use . good luck on this Jim

I highly recommend a Steyr SBS Pro Hunter in 7mm-08 Rem.

I totally agree. The Steyr Pro Hunter is a fabulous offering. I've been hunting this year with a 30-06. With load development, it was pretty good until I changed to Fed 210M primers and then it became a match rifle. That doesn't mean I'm dangerous with it but the rifle can shoot. With a Leopold VX2 scope, it weighs about 9.5 lbs. It's not skimpy on weight but for what your getting, it's a solid performer and I don't mind carrying it one bit. I just did a 9 dayer with the Steyr. I'd gladly sacrifice weight somewhere else for a good 'ole solid rifle like this one. Still... I've been look'in at the Tikka Superlites. 2/3 the weight and it's a Tikka.

Anyway... Steyr is a better gun than you'd expect and your a dope if you think otherwise. They shoot.

We sold tons of Steyr's back when I worked at the gun store. Customers loved them. We got them in by the truckload. We would run them on sale for $399 for blued, $499 for stainless. That may seem cheap, but you have to remember, this was 15+ years ago, and Steyr was not a very well-known rifle here in the U.S. market, and had to compete with the big names that have been around for over a century, so they priced them very very affordably. For a small fee, we would mount scopes and go sight-in a rifle for the customers on Saturday mornings, and I've shot more than my share of them, and those cold hammer-forged barrels are REALLY accurate.

Folks would come in to get their kid their first deer rifle, they'd buy the Steyr because it was so cheap, and we would help them pick out a scope, and rings, and all that stuff and get it all installed and bore-sighted for them. After a few weeks, they would come back in and talk about how accurate it was, and they would buy one for themselves. We sold tons of them.

I wouldn't mind finding a stainless SBS Pro Hunter in 7mm RemMag with the 25.6" barrel. Just like this...

Should have bought one back in the day when we sold them for cheap, but we live and learn. Those are hard to find these days. If I come across another one, I plan on buying it.
