Nitriding requires carbide to cut after it is done.

Yes sir, that is how I understand it as well. Although, there may be more to it as I can think of at least one premier 'smith that will not touch a barrel after nitriding; I wish I could remember what the reasoning was.

Maybe didn't want to ruin his reamer? Not sure if it is that hard or not?.......Rich

Yup, you need to have anything you nitride just the way you want it before the treatment. After that it is pretty much non workable. It might be possible to open up and tap mount holes with some hard bits but no rethreading or chambering or anything like that.

Picked 'em today and as soon as my Magnetospeed gets here, which I ordered from Midway, I am on my way to the range for some load work! :)

Rich, that is pretty much the sum of his issues, he just doesn't like to tear stuff up needlessly. It seems to be more of choice rather than ability. Several guys have posted that they dont care one way or another.... I can't remember what the Rockwell hardness goes up to.

Did you order the V1 or V2? That chrony is SO much easier to use, even for a lazy dude like me.

I'm looking forward to your results. Let us know how hard they were to clean initially, i've read they can be a real bear when clean directly from the Melonite process.

V1

Yeah, there is some brown crud (left over residue) in the bore that needs to be scrubbed out. Will be working on that tomorrow.

There was a very detailed thread on SH covering this subject. I saved it due to the content being so good. If you want, I can email you a PDF copy of it.

Mine had the brown crud that was difficult to remove too.
If you don't mind, please e-mail me a copy of the article as well.
I have the v-2 Magspeed and love it. One problem I did have though was my 30/375 S.I. with the 4 port mussle break blew the buckle right off of the connecting strap:rolleyes:........Rich

Ive Got a 338 Allen Mag XHS and the V2 has worked Very well on it. It goes over the big slab Muzzle Break and has never worked loose at all. I'll be looking into building a old M70 Win 30-06 into maybe a 6-06 Sherman Improved. Great thread on the 6.5. I have 6.5x284 and its been great. But would like more long range with the Matrix 160 and better velocity.

You can not go wrong with the Sherman. Pretty much the best of the magnum world without the magnum:D.......Rich

OK, you two have got my interest. What two or three articles or posts would you recommend to read as due diligence on the Sherman designs.
I am thinking 6.5mm Sherman as I have gone with the 6mm SLR with its one pass thru the die long (no turn)neck and (no fire forming) 30 degree shoulder in the 6mm.

I have both no turn (.297") and a .293" reamers for the Sherman. All you have to do is run a .270 or .280 case into your 6.5 die just far enough to leave a stiff bolt closing for headspace, load and shoot. If you want to pm me, I will leave my phone for more info anytime. I also have custom dies from Whidden available......Rich

That is very generous. I have an unchambered 6.5 1:8, Rock Creek carbon wrapped barrel NIB.
Q on the Whidden custom dies…aren't they made with the same reamer as the chamber…I read that the die should be .002-.003 undersize so you can make allowance for metal spring back after full length sizing. Have you heard that ? What are your thoughts ?

CR, Whidden makes the dies from the reamer print.
