Has anybody got their hands on one of these yet? If so what is the barrel contour? I'm guessing by length and weight of the gun its got to be around a #5???

I had one in my hands in 308 and it didn't seem like the barrel wa much heavier than a regular magnum savage contour. And don't forget the 26" barrel includes a little more than 2 inches worth of muzzle break so your really only getting 23.5 maybe.
I found your post on here and registered so I could reply. I have one in 6.5-284 and while I don't know how to tell you exactly what number contour, I can say that it is .720 from about 12 inches from the rear all the way out. I would call it a medium heavy sporter taper. Nowhere near a varmint type taper but heavier than a standard sporter. I have had it for 2 weeks and have found more than 15 loads with three bullets (Berger VLD in both 130 and 140 gr. and 129 SST) that it shoots half inch or less consistently at 100 yards in 90+ heat without cool down between shots. My best group to date was with a 130 VLD at 2900 FPS and a .405 inch center to center group at 175 yards. Not sure if any of this helps, but any way you scrape it, the contour they chose seems to work.
Iowaboy's concerns about the brake are not to be worried about. I am averaging 3130 FPS with a 140 grain bullet in a completely safe load with no pressure signs. Check some data for a 6.5-284 and you will see that this is amazing even for a 26 inch barrel. I have another 6.5-284 rifle with a 24 inch barrel and I am doing well to get over 2900 with the same load. I ordered this gun in January and when I saw it I had the same concerns. But after testing several loads and checking them against my other rifle, I now see that this gun gets better velocities than most 28" barrels and will match or come close to most loads worked up with 30" tubes. Not sure how they did it but 2 chronographs don't lie. The brake is 1.75-1.8 inches past the end of the rifling and switching it off negates its effect on velocity. With most powders having the brake open will take away about 20-30 FPS but if you use RL17 or Hybrid 100V, in 6.5-284 anyway, the brake being open inexplicably adds 40-100 FPS. I'm wondering the same thing. I've got three different sources looking for one for me, so I imagine I'll get notified when any of the big distributors get them on hand. Can't wait to get my hands on one.
I was told that mine was orderd through acusport and they said the 6.5-284s would be on backorder for a while. Most that have gotten them ordered them around the time I did. they told the dealer that he wouldn't get another for at least 6 weeks.

I've had a bit of a hard time finding one but I think my friend finally did. If you don't mind me asking what did you put on for a scope base. I'm looking for a 10moa or 20moa one piece picatinny. Also if you had to pick a starting load for the 140gr VLD's what powder and how much? Thanks for your time and happy shooting...

I just ordered one from Savage earlier this week. They said they are about 3 months out. I guess we will see.
This might work for a base. They offer 0 and 20 moa.

I used a standard weaver base, they work for me and I have yet to have any real issues. I can shim it if I see I will need longer range than my scope adjustment will allow. I have done it on some others with good results. As far as loads go. If you want a mild velocity load I would start with 48.5 grains H4831 SC or 48 gr Hybrid 100V. If you want 3000 FPS plus with outstanding SDs in the low single digits strt off with 49 grains of Reloader 17. I worked up loads with 140 and 130 Berger VLDs and my loads of choice are 51 gr. RL17 which is very close to max at around 3100 with the 140 and 49.7 H4831SC with the 130 at about 2900, this is my most accurate load. Tuesday I went out and shot a 180 yard group that was a ragged hole with three consecutive shots. the lengths that mine has liked were 3.21 with the 140 and 3.19 with the 130. Almost everything shoots sub half inch at 100 with RL17 and either bullet, but I really found a sweet spot with the H4831SC and that 130 gr VLD. They may seem to be dropping the ball on delivery of these rifles but the quality of mine is right where it needs to be. I would rather wait for something that will shoot like this one does than have them rush to get them out the door. Look at Remington as of late.

Thanks for the load data. I have a little of the H4831sc to play around with. For sure I'll try the RL17. The wind blows up here all the time so heavy high bc bullets with some velocity might mean the difference on hitting or missing the mark. Thanks for your time. I'll let you know later this summer how things turn out on my end for loads.

I just purchased a Model 111 LRH in the 6.5 x 284 for hunting. It fits nice next to my Model 12 LRPV in a 6.5 x 284 we've been doing some long range target and prairie dog shooting. I love the caliber and accuracy.
Problem: I can't seem to fit three in the magazine from the top of the model 111 LRH. If I drop the floor plate I can stack 3 in the magazine and close the plate....but that's not the way it's supposed to be....is it? Plus the metal box sleeve inside the magazine seems loose.
Any ideas? Does any one have a similar situation? thanks, Rick

I received mine about 5 months ago. I did take three months to get it. From speaking to a Marketing manager at Savage they had at that time already sold well over a 1000 of these in 6.5-284. I can see why. When I got mine, after a 20 round break-in. I was able to get 1.25 inch 5 shot groups at 500 yards! The load that worked well was 53 grains of H4831, Lapua brass, Federal Match Primer, 140gr. Hunting Berger VLD. This is producing 2941 fps. The stock is kind of crappy, and the muzzle brake is frozen in the on position, but with those groups, who cares.
