How Far with a 7mm Rem Mag?-Elk Hunting

I've always been comfortable with LBS of Engergy = LBS on the Hoof.

1000 lb Elk needs 1000 for me...
My rifle with 180 Hybrids is still carrying 1300lbs of energy at 1000.

Took my pronghorn at 931 pretty comfortable so I don't think I would hesitate to take the right shot, at the right bull at 1000...but that's about it for me

Using that as a baseline, my cartridge/bullet good to "just shy" of 1400 yards…..too bad that I'm a 600 yard shooter! memtb

IMHO, your maximum distance should be limited to the SHORTER of:
1) The distance at which your choosen bullet's velocity drops below that required for reliable expansion, OR
2) The maximum distance you have previously demonstrated your ability to achieve reliable hits on inanimate objects with your given set-up.
This applies regardless of caliber/cartridge,

Strictly bullet performance wise, as others have said keep your velocity above min requirements for expansion and energy >1500. The rest is dependent upon your capability. Here is one of my 280AI loads using 180VLD at 7000' elevation where ur 7RM should be right around this / slightly better. Good out to ~950yds. I took my last bull at 742yds.

Actually it does if you have an $ 8000.00+ package to shoot with and someone to make the right calls on windage and elevation and dial your scope for you....easy ...right?

You are obviously a good man willing to learn and polite to boot .....you'll do well....but ...just me here.....as I said....the video was a video....the young man was calm...all he had to do was pull the trigger....not taking anything away from him here..but for most...It's a lifetime of experience to make a shot at 1000 yards. The folks with him were the professionals....most of us don't have those mentors...we learn the hard way with 1000's of rounds of practice...and I do mean... thousands! Shoot straight...shoot often..best of luck!

We have killed bulls out to 882 with my 7RM pushing a 180 Hyb @ 2996fps.

I shoot the 168gr HVLD from my 7LRM. I have over 2000 FPS and over 1500# of kinetic energy at 1000 yards (shooter app). That's all well and good but I limit myself to 700 yards simply due to the fact that 700 yards is as far as I have access to for regular practice.

Have not killed anything past 240 yards, but the 175 EH powered by N570 in virgin Peterson 7 RM Long are coming out at 3040
