9.3x62 Does anyone shoot it?

I hunted with Erik in CAR on 3 different hunts between 2010-14. I was that guy who needed 3 tries to take everything I wanted, but what great hunts! 2014 was a little dicey. A lot of civil unrest and by then poaching was bad. In the space of the 3-4 years the LD eland herds went from 100s of animals to none to find. It was a few years later Erik was jailed and then shot as well. I believe he is now with African Parks and doing well.

What a wild ride that company had. The migrant cattle grazers, ivory poachers and the numbers of slaves they used to drive their cattle and ivory was insane. Erik could write a pretty interesting book if he ever had the notion to.

I bought an early Sauer 98 sporting rifle a few months ago in 8x57. It's about a 1924 rifle and the workmanship is absolutely amazing. Problem was, it was a "J" bore (.318) and the bore was not in good shape. I took the barrel off and sent to JES Reboring and had it bored and rifled with a 9.3 diameter bore. When I got it back I chambered it to 9.3x62. Haven't had a chance to work up a load yet but it's a darned classy piece of gear.

What a beauty that one is, if it shoots as good as it looks you'll have a winner!

I like and regularly use my CZ-550 Medium in 9.3x62. It has the short barrel and mannlicher stock.

My go-to load is a 250AB loaded to 2600 fps. VV540 is a good powder for this, or Varget or similar medium speed powders.

Brass is based on the 12mm head first seen on the 8x57 Mauser. Basically Otto Bock took a 286 grain slug from a 9,3x74R and put it at the front of an M98 action and measured from the cannelure to the back of the magazine box and got 62mm.

Brass can be made from .30-06, .270/.280 etc, but why? Brass is readily available from several makers.

I call mine my "young cannon" and have used it on everything from foxes, jackals, rehbock, red stags, pigs, warthog, wildebeest, hartebeest and a nice 700 lb zebra taken across a canyon at 300 yards.

My caliber tendencies sometimes play towards the more eclectic side, and 9.3x62 has me intrigued. Does anyone shoot it? How does it shoot, what do I need to know?

I wanted to get a CZ550FS in it but CZ discontinued them a few years ago.

Now I am looking at the Sauer 100 which shows at a reasonable price if they come back into stock.

I like odd calibers too. I picked a 9.3x62 up a couple years ago and I've finally gotten together the components to reload for it so I can go out and just shoot it. It looks very interesting on paper. Just need to find a scope for it. If I ever make it back to Africa, it will go with me.

I had Leupold make me a 2.5-8 VX-3 with a custom reticle for drops. 2" high at 100, on at 200, 12" low at 300

Very nice. I wanted a CZ 550FS in 9.3x62, but they discontinued it before I found 1.

I just put my 9.3x62 barrel back on my Savage. I have tested a number of powders with the 250 TSX. I decided to use 370 Sako Mag brass reformed to 9.3x62 because it is a 60,000 psi cartridge and can run the x62 hotter. Its worked well for me. My better groups are in the .3-.5 range and others are in the .7-.8 range. My rifle has a Pac-Nor 24" 12T barrel. Powders that stood out were IMR-3031, RL-17, N-540, and N-550 with groups of .3-.5 with speeds around 2700 but no pressure signs. I am going to start testing with 240 Hammers soon and expecting good things. IME, the 9.3x62 is an inherently accurate round and recoil is about like the 220 gr 30-06 loads. The most important thing is to pay close attention to headspace since there isnt much shoulder there. I run 1.5-2 thou bump and no issues. You wont be undergunned with it.

Great write-up, beautiful rifle nicely put together, and apparently…..very deadly! It seems to be a near perfect blend of funtionality!

In the write-up, you didn't mention the rifle's weight. What does she weigh in "fighting trim", scoped, fully loaded, and slung? Just curious about the weight. From the photos…..I'm gues'n about 8-14 to 9-4.

I see that it's "NOT" wearing a "weed burner"……how have you killed so much game, while surviving the recoil, without developing a severe flinch or experiencing Cornea separation? Asking for a friend!

Sorry for the delayed response. The rifle setup weighs in at 8lbs 6oz without sling or ammo. Im switching out the Zeiss conquest V4. The zeiss glass is great but I didnt gel to the paralax adjustment and red dot on/off located on the same knob, just made it to difficult to use. I found a great deal on a used swarovski Z6i. Better glass and the paralax and red dot controls are seperate and more refined. Hope that helps.
