One Gun?

standard western big game, have or have had most calibers, personal favorite is 6.5x55 Swede favorite for Big big game is a Sako 9.3x62 but getting to the stage in life and have enough connections around the west that an occasional chance pops up to go short notice or more remote and looking for the do-it-all rifle in a common to find caliber.
Buddy and I got a chance at great mule deer country and getting there found out he had forgotten ammo to his pet 308 Norma....not something you find on the shelves in remote hardware stores!
The 30-06 I already have is certainly "enough gun" just been thinking it might be time (and eyesight) to re-visit a 7RM or 300WM and a REALLY good scope as at least a standby for the next 10yrs or so.

300 win on a pre 64 model 70 action sounds nice.

The model 70s aren't real popular around here, but I have one from 1962 that was reworked with a stainless barrel and then cerakoted. Looks great, works great, shoots great. Different chambering, but same idea.

Post some pics when it's done!

most everything ive shot and seen shot...including Wy antelope has been under 200yds. But...that bullwinkle moose of mine was on a ridge top at 8000ft and leaving and a stretch at 325yds for my 4x scoped 9.3x74R Ruger No 1!
wouldnt have it any other way.... mostly.
Do think its time i grew up some and got a "sensible" one gun.

65Jeffrey, much to the dismay of many on this forum, I've been a "one gun" hunter for use on big game since 1990!
I've never felt over (whatever the hell that is) gunned or under gunned!

To clarify……I have several firearms, but only one big game rifle! That could change if I ever go hog hunting in the thickets where I grew up! memtb

PRC a great round but dont see it surpassing the Win for availability ,not in our time.
Ridleys Market in Pinedale Wyoming and Allbrights Hardware in Lusk Wyoming as examples are my benchmarks....can i find ammo there? and yes usually i can find some version of 7REM and 300WIN.
Be asured i will continue to use my oddballs....like a favorite 7x65R...but looking for a grab-n-go whitetail-moose 80yds to 500yds.

The 7mmRM and the 300WM have been banging steel and killing stuff since they were introduced. The 300WM has a larger variety of bullet weights/configurations available if that matters to you. Provided you do your part, the 7mmRM will tip over anything the 300WM will but with a little less recoil. Will either substantially outperform your '06 in the field - no IMHO. Find a platform you like and rock on!

Jeffrey.
I've never been on a moose hunt but I've heard most are shot at close range.
I have been on elk hunt and saw buddy shoot a bull at close range with a 30-06 and the Remington165 grain factory corelokt bullet did a great job.
That ammo combo is great but I've heard that with the dissolution of Remington that the new folks discontinued that corelokt offering. If true that is a sad occurrence.
