One Gun?

Obviously an impossible question but.....
I have a fair collection of interesting rifles.
I HAVE a VERY good 30-06....
Do i "need" a new/different ONE GUN for that potential short notice go to the remotes big game hunt? I.E. short notice fill in for elk/moose to prime area.
Im good to 500yds.
Thinking a 7mm Rem or 300 Win?
Love the STW but looking at availability of factory ammo.
Heavy for caliber bullet guy, not especially susceptible to recoil but a 7 does kick less than a 300....and of course 300 hits harder on the downrange end.
Thoughts?

What game animals will you be hunting , and your primary locations that you will hunt? Are you limited to factory ammunition? memtb

Jeffrey.
I've never been on a moose hunt but I've heard most are shot at close range.
I have been on elk hunt and saw buddy shoot a bull at close range with a 30-06 and the Remington165 grain factory corelokt bullet did a great job.

Unless you "muff" the shot with your handgunā€¦..then, the ranges can get rather long! Well, that's what I understand! šŸ˜‰ memtb

I'll cheat. How about one gun in multiple calibers (a switch barrel, either Savage, AI, or custom action)? That way, you don't have to choose, just get barrels in whatever caliber/profile/length combo you like. Though, I will say unless you're hunting blue whale, that 30-06 can probably handle it with good shot placement.

Mine is the ol 308 win. Love that gun
I'm with him^

Nothing wrong with '06. I've had all kinds of calibers, fast ones, big ones, slow ones, and keep going back to 308, just lots of experience with it and can load it to pretty much any job from yotes to moose to bear (I've taken three grizzly and a black with .308). If I had two it would be 308 and .260/6.5C because they're like cheating compared to .308 when reaching past 5/600. Three would add on 7mm or 300 WM.

standard western big game, have or have had most calibers, personal favorite is 6.5x55 Swede favorite for Big big game is a Sako 9.3x62 but getting to the stage in life and have enough connections around the west that an occasional chance pops up to go short notice or more remote and looking for the do-it-all rifle in a common to find caliber.
Buddy and I got a chance at great mule deer country and getting there found out he had forgotten ammo to his pet 308 Norma....not something you find on the shelves in remote hardware stores!
The 30-06 I already have is certainly "enough gun" just been thinking it might be time (and eyesight) to re-visit a 7RM or 300WM and a REALLY good scope as at least a standby for the next 10yrs or so.

I suggestion was going to be the .338 WM. Ammunition pretty easily found in much of Wyoming, recoil similar to .300 Win., fully capable of the "big" stuff should that hunt present itself, shoots flat enough to make it a decent medium to long range cartridge. A pretty good "all around cartridge"! memtb

Well, the .300 WM is definitely a great all-around "game club" for sure. I guess the question between the .30-06 and .300 WM is; is the squeeze worth the juice? and only you know the answer. šŸ¤” Good luck, ;) Cheers
