Well I'm running the 123's at about 3550 now in the LRM and at 300yds that'll pop a coyote like a 52gr 220 Swift pops a prairie dog. Not ideal for hide hunting but there's not enough left to foul up the disc next time the farmer plows so you don't have to pick them up. The most humane kill possible I guess short of a lightning strike!

You are right. Ive also got a 300 RUM custom that shoots well set up for hunting. When I do happen to draw a rifle tag, Im taking my STW. Im just more comfortable with it, and it tends to shoot a little bit better. Ive got much more money in my STW and that may be the difference. I mostly bow hunt these days. Rifle tags in the mountain states are getting too hard to getLess volume in the vessel, equal loads, greater pressures I suspect along with slower burning powders specialty than we had when the STW was born.
Considering the long barrel life of the 300wm I'm unconvinced that longer necks actually have much effect on throat erosion.
I won't be shooting over 1,200yds so I'm not concerned with being able to load the next generation of even heavier/longer bullets. If I were shooting ELR I'd probably do something completely different and move up to the Cheytac 375.
I think what the .375Ruger case does for us though is give us a very economical solution for wildcatting hunting rounds from 6.5-338 and even to .350 if someone wants to.
The short fat cases just give you an efficiency/economy powder wise we can't get from the larger cases.
Oh, if I really want to fling'm long, I still have 3 300 Rum's that won't be going anywhere including a one of a kind 300 Rum Sharpshooter.

Indeed. That's why my new place is in one of the few counties in Texas where free ranging elk can be found.
They are considered believe it or not to be an invasive exotic so they don't even require tags and can be shot year round.

I didnt realize there were any free ranging Elk, except maybe in the far western reaches. Which county? Then again I dont know why there wouldnt be, theres nearly every exotic you could imagine, running around free range somewhereIndeed. That's why my new place is in one of the few counties in Texas where free ranging elk can be found.

We're a bit Southeast of Alpine just north of Big Bend almost due south of Ft. Stockton.
Elk actually used to be Native To The Plains States, including Texas. They were reintroduced in SW TX in the late 1800's when some ranchers decided NM was too far to go to hunt. The original stock as I understand it came from Wyoming.
What blows me away is that they are insanely large. I would have expected them to adapt in a way that would have produced smaller elk due to the terrain and vegetation but they are positively thriving in that desert environment.

Thats good! I have heard theyre large, but didnt realize thats free range Elk. Your in a good area out there. I hunted Whitetail not more than an hr out of Ft Stockton, for one season in the 80's. Had a few aoudad, and mouflon on that place. I still go back most years and do an archery Axis hunt with a buddy near Sonora. Couldnt make it this past year, but might likely head out there when I make a trip down in the spring. I heard that freeze last year put a pretty good dent in the Axis population in that area.

I've got a decent assortment 140's 145's 150's 160's162's&some 168's ,sometimes I might sound like a newbie,but I'm not, just stating the fact , got other 7 calibers to feed also ,708, 7mag , so thks I learn a lot just from reading,back to the discussion about the Great 7STW Brotherhood ,

That deep freeze event put a pretty hard kill on a lot of the African and Asian exotics. Our area TWP Biologist said it really hit the Black Buck extremely hard. He found one sheltered canyon where a herd had bunched up to get out of the wind. He wasn't how sure how many were there total when it started but in a 100yds circle 30 some odd had died. A cougar they were tracking along with two tagged bears had led them to the spot which was really remote.
The first trip I made down lookin gat the piece of land I bought I climbed the mesa and in three hours identified 11 different species of game including one really big old boar bear and one of the largest lions I've ever come across.
A week later I owned it.
Now many of the old big ranch trusts are breaking up and the heirs selling out so We'll probably try to find a little more land in a slightly different part of the county more to the N and West just to add another dimension to what's available.
This is by choice the last place I'll ever live.

Just purchased my first STW. Picked up a very nice Sako 75 stainless in a McMillan stock. Now on the hunt for some ammo.

I'd just reload then if you do... dies are available but there's not much for ammo... rl22 or 25 and a 140 is great... 175-180 usually go something like retumbo...
