New build 264 Win Mag vs 6.5/257 Weatherby

6.5 PRC is a much better choice...equal or better velocities and much kinder to barrels!
Doc Dempster
I just built 2 6.5 prcs in the last couple of years and my friend just built a 264 win mag he's a traditionalist my velocity with 123 gr Hammer absolutes are 3450 his are about the same with 10 grs more powder same length barrels the 264 has a lot of free bore mine dosnt so with 10 grs less powder witch one will have more throat erosion ? Personally I don't care barrel's in any hot 24 25 or 264 cal is going too have faster throat erosion the 264 Win has always had that reputation if you want too get the most out of the 264 cal go 1-7.5 twist or 1-7 in the 25 cal

I see that you found my old thread....https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/6-5-270-257-wby-mag-what-do-i-need.184309/page-7#post-1862241

You know that you made it into the bigtime when Redding makes your dies...https://www.brownells.com/reloading/reloading-dies/handgun-dies/full-length-die-set-6-5-257-weatherby-mag-sku749008129-35758-71255.aspx. Way before I thought about the cartridge...

Hope you went with the Wby cartridge/case...

Got good accuracy with the 150 Sierras at close to 3400fps...

I have some 156 Bergers that I need to try...I am glad that Pac-Nor Barrels are back in business after their fire. Their 6.5/257 Wby barrel shoots very well...5 groove, 1-8 twist, 28".

Just checked...again...I have some (lots) 160gr Matrix bullets...down the rabbit hole again...

You can't say you made a decision and not tell us!! Well I guess you can cause it's your thread but c'mon man!

Not that it matters but I'm a 264 fan. Got a Sendero to work some loads for sitting in the safe.
Well here she is.

Improved case picked up 7 grains of water capacity. Not sure how that relates in powder weight.

First off she sho is purdy!!

Second, Maaaaaaaan im liking the looks of that WMI case!

Great to see it come to fruition!
Loving that improved shoulder, I'm a fan of the AI case.
Let me know what numbers you get and I'll post up some of mine out of the 8" twist 29" barrel I'm running.

Cheers.

Will do. I'm gonna fireform some loads this weekend. My problem now is since I blew the taper out of the case I can't use my standard 264 WM bushing die to resize the necks so I can load up the fireformed cases. I'm going to order custom dies but they are 14-16 weeks after they receive my fired brass. ☹️

I will be trying to figure out a work around while waiting though. Does anyone know of a universal bushing type neck sizing die?

I think Forster or 21st Century just came out with a universal neck die…..could be wrong though.

Cheers.

If you know anyone with a 26 Nosler and a set of dies you could probably use them to neck size enough of the neck to get by.

I'm working on a fun 110 action for a mcgowen 32" 7.5twist for a 264wm. With some pre-ballistic workup I should be able too get the 150smk just over 2,200 yards before going subsonic. I hope it's true, it would be FUN! 264wm is my favorite cartridge!
