Bullet testing, again....

I could send you some .338 cal 250 Super Bull Dozer II's to test out, maybe some 7mm 171 PVA Cayugas too
The 250gr Super Bull Dozers would be great! They'd be a perfect bullet to test along side the 260gr Hammer Hunter. I'm not familiar with the Cayugas, but I'm not sure if a 171gr 7mm would stabilize well in the twist rates I have. Have you tried them in a twist slower than 1-8"?

Actually, Impacts aren't what I had. They are the new ones that aren't out yet.
I'm out of the other Speers anyway

🙂
I had to look up the Speer Impacts, they look like a good one to try when they do come out. Speer bullets are on my list of bullets that always shoot well, but I never use them in anything! LOL

The 7mm 170 (sorry, 170, not 171) is recommended for 1-8 or tighter, so an 8 twist should stabilize, that is what they tested it in. Anything slower would be a question mark.....The rifle I put together to use them is a 7.5, I always like to go a little tighter than minimum. I also have some 7mm 151's I may be able to spare, they just need a 9 twist or tighter, would that be more conducive to your set up?

I have around 175 of the 250 SBDII's, so p.m. me and I'll send ya some.

How about some 125 BD-2's in 6.5mm and 150 BD-2's in 7mm? Don't seem much testing done on them... These are the weights that will run good in the most common twists.

For you guys who've used the Badlands bullets, do you know if they'll sell them in smaller packs? I'm ordering a bunch of different bullets from Hammer Bullets since they'll sell them in 15 packs for around $20-25 depending on the bullet. I'll reach out to guys at Badlands Precision next week and ask them if they'll do something similar.

Here is a picture of some bullet testing Lonnie did a few weeks ago. This looks very similar to York's testing a few years ago.

Those are almost identical to what I saw. It's always nice to see others get similar results.

Here are some new tests of high-velocity impacts with 270 bullets. These were fired from a 270/338 RUM wildcat with a 1-8.5" twist. The approximate impact velocities are written on the gel blocks.

117gr HH
impact velocity 3750fps

- 30.5" Total average penetration for 3 shots
- weight of the recovered bullet shank 89.8gr

156gr HH
impact velocity 3280fps

- 30" penetration before exiting the top of the block
addition testing will be done to measure actual penetration.

170gr Berger EOL
impact velocity 3120fps

- 24" penetration of the largest bullet fragment.
- The largest recovered bullet fragment weighed 23.2gr, the rest of the bullet broke up into tiny pieces.

140gr Sierra TGK (Gamechanger)
impact velocity 3360fps

- 14.5" total penetration.
- The largest recovered bullet fragment weight 39.4gr. The rest of the bullet broke up into tiny pieces.

Anymore details on the 145 eldx? You have a picture but nothing else like the other bullets tested. I picked up a box to try in my 270 ss. Do you plan on testing the 175 grain gamechangers?
Thanks

How did you make out with getting smaller packs? I may be able to send you some 6.5mm 125's and 7mm 150's if you're unable to get what you need from them. Let me know.

Do you have any Berger hybrids? I know many of he guys on here say they will kill well but I'd like to see them tested. Also are you planning to test the 30cal 166 and 181 Hammers? Would you like any funds to support this testing, I know components and gel aren't free.

Yorke-1------thanks much for your work as well your sharing. I'm kind of new around here so if you've done what I'm about to ask please forgive me.

But, I'd love to see similar tests for big game rounds, with the exception of impact speed being in the 1500 fps range.

Amen to these sentiments. We are all benefitting from these tests.

I got busy and completely forgot to call them. I'll reach out to them tommorrow.

Sorry, I forgot about that one. It penetrated exactly 16" (one block) and actually bounced off the face of the second block. You can actually see the bullet bounce off the block and land on the table in the video. Retained weight was 87.6gr.

I used the 145 ELDx for all my barrel break in and fire forming in both the 270 barrels and they shot pretty well through all of that. They do appear to hold together better 140gr Gamechanger in the test when both impacted at roughly the same velocity. Both the 140 TGK and the 145 ELDx shoot within 30fps with the same load. I probably will get around to testing the 175gr Gamechangers as well. I keep telling myself to buy some to test, but never get around to it!

I do have some 124gr and 180gr Hammer Hunters that I'm going to test out of the 300 RUM. I'll also mention that the guys at Hammer Bullets were a huge help and sent me sample boxes of one light and one heavier bullet in 6.5mm, 7mm, 270, and 308 to test. The goal is to compare the results of a light for caliber bullet and a more conventional weight bullet. All of the Hammer bullets I've tested so far (and a few more coming up) are styles that I already shoot in my guns, I'll get to the 30 caliber ones soon, I just need to free up some brass for the 300 RUM. I never shoot that rifle so I only have like 40 pieces of brass sitting around for it! LOL

If you (or anyone else) wanted to help with the tests, I'm always open to folks sending me a handful of whatever bullet they'd like to see tested. I switched most of my hunting guns over the Hammers a few years back and burned through a lot of my other odds and ends for plinking ammo over the years. Bergers are a bullet everyone likes to see, but the only Berger I still shoot is the 300gr OTM! If you have a bullet you'd like to see tested and can spare 10 or so of them, I'll get them added to the list.
