7mmSTW vs 7mm remington ultra mag

I do NOT suggest running a short throated 7rum. The powder charge drop associated with keeping pressures in check dropped nearly all powders below the 80% fill threshold you really need to keep powder orientation issues at bay. The only powders I found that were usable were 50 cal stick powders. rl50 and h50bmg were tried and h50bmg shot well with the 175 eld-x. It didn't smoke cases and tear bullets up (the bullet thing is probably the bore) like retumbo and the 180/183 sierra pills. I would probably work with rl50 a bit more but h50bmg works and I'm not burning up bore life on a rifle that shoots below 1/2 moa already.
Thanks for this

Well, actually having built (chambered with custom recievers) and shot the STW, RUM, and Mag. I feel I have some working knowledge, the STW and RUM are barrel burners for sure, especially when ran at high pressures, you can get a little more velocity but for what price, not sure its worth it. (Imho) That being said they are classic cartridges and like any cartridge has its pluses and minuses. I love the 7mm Rem Mag, it is the best all around cartridge out there, I know there are plenty of people that will most certainly disagree, dont beat me up over it. All 3 are great performers, just find what you like and.... what you can get components for. If you would like specifics about any certain cartridge, please feel free to PM me.
Thank you

Uh, BBean, i had an STW when they were still a wildcat. Now shoot the 7 RUM. Both are very good. Running N570 in my RUM now with excellent results, speed and accuracy. Yep - it's a barrel eater, but d*mn the speed! Use it sparingly and don't run it hot!
I'm on my 3rd 7stw barrel and 4th 7rum barrel... They've both been great to me. Brass life is prolly a bit better in a sensibly loaded 7rum, but the 7stw will nearly keep up at a good bit lower charge given standard chambers for both.

I'm having a 7mm built right now and contemplated the STW or Rum for a brief second. When deciding, I looked at barrel life, excess powder and the lack of reloading supplies available. So- I'm having it chambered in good old Rem Mag with an 8 twist and pretty short barrel. Reason being is simple, I also have a 300RUM, and that is what I'll use if I want a little more speed and hit, or a lot of hit :) .
The 7mm will be my walking gun and I'll still be able to get out to 5-700 yrds if needed.

When its been shot i was very careful to not heat it atal 1 shot every 15minutes or so and it is shockingly acurate im going to dope it out to 1200yrds once my scope shows up for it and sell it ready to go with 100 rounds of loaded shels and the dies will go with it boyds laminate thumbhole stock with a mercury tube in it its kicking about like a 270

GL as I said I'm not knocking it at all and it is a fine round, I just found the STW suited me better and I do think its a better combo, once a gain just my opinion

This, Absolutely, This

Define a barrel burner please

No such thing as a barrel eater GL, you know better than that ;)

Well, to me, huge powder charge and high pressure = throat erosion. I'm running 103+ grains with 131 Hammers at nearly 3700 fps. It's deadly. Brass lasts 3-4 firings. Throat has moved, but haven't measured it lately. Don't care.

Back off 2 to 3 grains and brass life should greatly increase.......

Geeze your running close to the same velocities as my RUM with a 7gr heavier bullet getting a little better than 3200 with a 168gr berger vld h1000 87grs of it
Surely there has to be more speed available. In a 7RM running the 168 classic Berger and 70.5grs of H1000 at 3060 in a 26" barrel. I know 140FPS but dang that's a lot more powder. Heck I have heartburn about the Rem Mag performance/efficiency.
