Now that Nikon is out of the optics business, who is a comparable replacement? I have several Nikon Monarchs and I can tell you that Votex mid level optics aren't as good. So who?

I have no direct experience but based on reviews and selection, I would think Athlon would be a good choice. Definitely agree with you on Vortex. I love my Gen 1 PST but my Monarch beats the pants off it for clarity.

I've found Burris a comparable substitute for Nikon. Probably better glass and decently priced. Have been tempted to buy a high end Monarch offered on forums, but when Nikon reneged on their warranty I'm resisting. A shame owners of some pricey Nikon Monarchs "including me" are stuck with optics without a warranty. I can't sell them and stick someone else with a optic with no backup. Nikon certainly dumped on their loyal customers.

If I understand correctly they only canceled the warranty on optics with illuminated reticles.
I have been impressed with Tract optics as they use Schott glass.
The one I looked through was super clear and crisp.
The most expensive scope is 1294.00 If I remember right but the lower tier scopes are where I have been also impressed.
I have seen quite a few Riton optics that they say are from Japan and are priced right and a super warranty.
Amazon Prime has some of the Riton scopes.Just a couple right off the top of my head.

I had a nikon riflescope fail last year and I sent it in under warranty. They no longer have the tooling to repair the riflescopes so I was issued a full price MSRP voucher that could be used for anything on their website. They still make spotting scopes, binoculars and cameras...
i ended up with a nice new set of binoculars.
then I spent money on a Burris signature HD scope. It cost $100 more than the nikon MSRP but is a fantastic scope. I'll definitely get another one of the Burris. I've loved the Burris signature rings for many years and it was nice to get a Burris scope again that exceeded my expectations. Very clear glass, excellent adjustments, love the reticle.

I feel your pain buddy. I have 2 top of the line Weaver scopes and the same thing, gone out of optics business. I do have a Nikon Prostaff 7i range finder. Have they discontinued this product as well?
As for WHO ... I've used Bushnell scopes for almost 40 years with very good experiences with them. I have several Bushnell scopes on rifles. Prices range for all shooters, with the Elite Tacticals and Forge scopes, although after viewing the website it appears that something is going on there also. They no longer list the Forge, Nitro, and Elite Tactical is very limited. Midway still has some Forge scopes at reasonable prices in stock as well as Nitros with very good prices.

I moved from Nikon to Vortex and I have been completely satisfied with my gen 1 PST scopes. If something has changed from then till now I have no idea. I believe I have 4x PST FFP scopes and haven't had a lick of trouble with any of them.
I thought the Nikons were OK, very limited internal movement, harder to read scope dials and basically no serious retical choices. When they introduced the turret knobs that disengage when you lift them up, I stopped buying them.

Since I made a comment on Vortex, I should explain. The Pst was purchased for the reticle and FFP. Features I wanted for my 308 and I am not disappointed with the scope. There is nothing wrong with the optics, they are just not of the same clarity as my Monarch, and that was stated to me by Vortex CS.
My Monarch is a 6-24x50 target dot, SFP non illuminated. The optics are very clear, but at times it does have some aberrations.
My Athlon comment was a personal opinion based on several reviews and their options for tactical style reticles.

I have a Monarch scope that I love. I have used quite a few. I also have a Brunton in the same warranty boat/quality range. I was very tempted by some sales I had seen at Natchez when they were selling inventory off. Most of what I use in a similar price range are Leupolds, like vx3, and Vortex Viper.

As has already been suggested Burris makes some great scopes that will be even better than the old Nikon Monarch. I also have two Riton scopes and they perform above their price level. If you can find Bushnell Elites on Ebay, they are better than Monarchs too, but they are getting rare now, so a good deal is harder to find. I bought a couple of Elites back when they were still inexpensive and I'm really happy to have them.
I don't think the mid-priced Vortex or Athlons really measure up to what you are trying to replace or upgrade from the old Monarch III.
Swift also uses Schott glass, but they are a relatively inexpensive scope that almost always out-performs its price level. I have a couple of Swift Scopes on rimfires and I'm happy with them for that purpose.
If you narrow down the reticle you want, that may make the selection easier to make.
