Questions on 6.5 prc

Wow, we had two bull elk killed with the 142 ABLR out of 6.5x284's a year ago. First was a 6x6 at 360 yards, one shot quartering to put it down and out. Second was broadside at 300, hit him high and spined him so he got a follow up shot in the lungs. I'll find a picture of the damage to the second one.

Maybe they have improved them. Mine were from when they first introduced them. Your impact speed would have been about 2500 I am thinking. Regardless I have had 2 bad experiences and that is enough. I want a bullet that will open but not blow at reasonable speeds. As a partition does. A 142 6.5 has an SD in the 280,s off the top of my head. Takes a dam poor bullet impacting at 2800 not to penetrate.

Lots of differing opinion on bullets, a lot which can be eliminated by plugging in your personal parameters. Such as the shooters looking for a 1000 yard bullet when, their system doesn't include a basic range finder.

That works fine unless something shows up closer. I am not going to carry 3 different kinds of bullets. I chose the accubondLR because I was hunting whitetails. 18 inches maybe through the shoulders? Where I was hunting I could shoot to 1300. So the dilemma. Small animal with a bonded bullet and a BC of .625. Should work yes? NOT in my case. I will shoot the rest of my LR accubonds at jack rabbits and coyotes. It should turn them inside out. If I burn the barrel that is cool too. Screw on another one!! Like buying a corvette and worrying about your tires. Lol

I shot a big muley buck at 522 a few days ago with berger vld 140s. He went 10 yards. Shooting them at 3100 fps. The round busted through the rib cage on the exit but didn't physically make it out of the hide. They are very accurate and I'm 1/1 for DRT shots with em.

Our marketing manager did a bunch of powder testing in two articles about 6.5 PRC. Might be helpful. Over the last three years we've taken deer, elk, and pronghorn in Colorado with this caliber running the 143 ELD-X.

I use the Lapua 139 grain Scenar myself.

On another site I saw pages of good results with that bullet.

Word on the street is that Berger is going to make a 156 gr bullet for 2021. If you are hunting elk I would recommend going with the heaviest hunting round that shoots accurately enough.

i have a lot of 127 LRX that i had bought for my 6.5 Creedmoor, and after getting its big brother the 6.5 PRC i've just shot 143 ELD-X so far. they have been great. this year we've (my boys and i) killed 5 deer and an elk with it. Elk at 493 yards - perfect one shot kill broadside through the lungs. Mule deer doe at 360 yards also broadside lungs/heart, 12 yr old shot this one. Mule Deer Buck 45 yards broadside quartering spine shot- (my 10year old shot this one) rifle is sighted in at 200 yrds... - a Whitetail doe 250 yards, broadside, mercy shot after a friend wounded it, a whitetail buck at 90 yards broadside lungs, and a 350 yard whitetail doe low in ribs quartering away.

i have a lot of 143 gr ELD-x and my reloads are matching accuracy and velocity from factory loads, so i'll keep it! i will keep using it for now until i can find a 140ish all copper that works well. i've really loved this PRC this year. its what i always wished i had from the creedmoor velocity wise... the Creedmoor is still an awesome shooter and has done its fair share of shooting and will continue to take game...

I have always been very skeptical of the 6.5 caliber. This year I decided to try it out deer hunting so I got the least expensive 6.5 creedmoor I could find and went out. I shot a white tail doe at 210 yards and it dropped it in one shot. I was shooting 143gr. hornady ELD-X bullets hand loaded with a mid velocity load Winchester 760 powder from the Hornady manual 9th addition. I'm still a little skeptical of this cartridge on elk if I ever get a once in a lifetime elk tag in my state I will take a larger bore rifle for that hunt. This is a picture of a new bullet and the bullet I recovered from the deer.

Makes sense or if up close go for neck or lungs, out further go for bone.

Update I forgot to mention. My buddy shot a white tail buck the week before with the 6.5 PRC and tipped it over in one shot using the same bullet. I don't know what his load was though.
