I had always floated the barrel or if anything only maybe the barrel only right before the taper starts.

Have 223 tactical 16 1\2" starting to put together.

Anyone ever bedded action and full length of the heavy barrel?

What was your results?

There are a few instances that full length bedding may be necessary, but rarely. When weight is placed on the forend while shooting (By pods or just resting the forearm on something) It can/will cause a shift in POI and also be inconsistent.

On light weight barrels contours I prefer to fully float the barrel. On heavy contours, I like to bed the first 1/2 to 1 inch of the barrel shank as long as it is not tapered.

If what you have been doing has been working, stay with that process.

Old debate of which is better, or if there is a "better". Barrett (and a few others) full length beds their Fieldcraft rifles, and those shoot lights out. On some, and if done correctly, I would actually prefer a full length bed job. (why does that sound dirty?lol)

I've always been curious about more "dampening" methods of bedding. Vibration is our problem, so what can we do to minimize vibrations? Urethane?

Full length bed touching the barrel?
Yup, the entire length of the stock touching the barrel solid. Zero movement. From their FAQ:
Is the barrel free floated? Why not?

No, this is not a 'free' floated barrel. Full length bedding reduces barrel harmonics and increases stock rigidity.

Barrels need to resonate.
I too, bed the first inch or so beyond the lug on bulls/extra long/heavy barrels.
Takes some stress off the face of the action rather than just hanging 8 or 10 lbs off it.

I always bed the recoil lug area of the action and under the chamber. Just the way I was taught to do things by my mentor smith. I do dabble with the rear tang a bit if it isn't sitting square in the stock.

I've always bedded from the recoil lug & along the two contact strips all the way back to the Tang. Heaviest barrel I have done this way was a 28" sendero contour. The rest have been 26 sendero contour & less. This is the way I supposed it was to be done. So some of you guys don't bed all the way back to the rear Tang?

Thanks for the replies. After doing little research about Forbes NULA and Barrett Fieldcraft going to try the action and full barrel bedding. This is in very stiff ADL stock and the barrel is heavy sendero contour that is only 16 1\2" long. The action is sitting on 1 \2" aluminum pillars.

This is experiment to just see what happens. It is easy enough to fix if no good.
