I haven't heard of many successful conversions that needed the bolt face opened up. I wouldn't do it. If the conversion has the same bolt face it's no problem.

Better and cheaper solution is pick up a Tikka T3 varmint in a 270 Wsm and use your Remington as a trade in
I got one and it shoots 1 inch groups at 300

I'm not nor have I ever called myself a gunsmith, however I spent over 30 years of my life earning a living in machine shops, i really like to tinker i always had a project on the burner, a good Smith that knows how to read a blue print can make that conversion work, I have done over a dozen, I've fit the brownels sako type extractor to 223 bolt faces as well as converting them to standard and magnum bolt faces, as well as lapua and the larger weatherby magnums never had a problem, the real challenge i guess is finding the right smith,

If the 270 WSM is the way you wish to go, the right bolt you need to make the conversion is on eBay right now! Buy it and sell yours. You will most likely break even, you'll save time and money without any of the hassles.
A few people have mentioned lack of bullets which surprises me a little. I have three, .277 cals in my safe and two of them still have 1:10 twist barrel's for now. I still have 90 grain varmint bullets, 115 grain Barnes, 117 Hammers, 130s in everything, 135 match, 140 in everything, 145 Eld-x, 150's in everything, 160 partition and 180 grain Woodleigh available to me. That's 10 different weights....so where is the shortage? You only hunt with one. Add in 156 hammers, 165 Matrix and 170 Bergers to the party if you have an 8 twist barrel like my 270 WSM. I definitely don't feel shorted. Now if we're talking my 25-06, then I feel limited.
As one who has done many modifications of guns over the years let me make you a good suggestion that will save you possible grief and displeasure ahead as well as a more effective way to spend your money. Sell the 6.5 and then either buy a new rifle or build a new one using a new action system and blueprint the barrel to it. Your action is too weak for the 270WSM and to have a smith rework it is a gamble that is not cost effective.
I think a 6.5x284 or a 7mm Remington Magnum might be worth a try unless you want to stay with the short action. If so then the 270 WSM is a great choice if you don't forget to keep plenty of rounds as they have become very difficult to find anymore.

Sell your rifle. Use the proceeds to buy a short action SAUM action, modify it for the Wyatt's magezine, and build a new rifle exactly like you want, throated to take advantage of the magezine. Better yet make the rifle a Switch Lug so you can easily change calibers. I bought a SAUM action for just that purpose.
P.S. I'll give you 300 bucks for your Remington. (ha Ha) If it was mine, I'd modify it with the Wyatt's box, and rechamber it for a 6.5-.284. (maybe) Us gun nuts are just too **** fickle.

I'm having a hard time following this, you want a 270 WSM but many suggestions of a 260 or 7mm-08, do people not realize a WSM is in a completely different power level??
Someone said to sell the 6.5 because the action is to weak, that's just flat wrong!!
Its not a big deal to have the bolt.opened up.and an M16 extractor installed then open the rails about 40 thou, fit a Wyatts box and follower and your good to go.
Personally I like using Rem 7 mags rip the barrel of order a.Kwik klip kit, chamber up in 270 WSM, load some 170 bergers in the 3000fps range and rally!!

I'm curious about the cost effectiveness of him doing this to a new rifle instead of getting most of his money back and starting from scratch. He will most likely just be able to use the action and have to replace everything else when, to me, it would be more cost effective to start from scratch.

Your action if certainly strong enough for this conversion, the action regardless if it's chambered for the 222 Rem or a short mag the actions are all the same, the differences are the boot stop follower and magazine box,
May want to consider keeping the rem 700 CM and look for a Tikka in 270 WSM or any large bolt face Tikka to build from. Tikka's work great for WSM/SAUM/PRC length cartridges. I don't know how you may have customized the CM but it can prove highly effective using LR pills at reasonable distances. An aftermarket trigger and stock can do wonders for a 700. Would be interested in how the CM has underperformed for you. I used a 270 WSM for many years and the in most situations the CM would have been sufficient. The 270 WSM will basically extend your range 200 yards or so over the CM but out to 500 yards both will take most N American game.
